LAKELAND, Fla. (March 1, 2014) - Rollins and
Florida Southern traded blows through the first quarter and much of
the second on Saturday, but in the end, the Mocs pulled away as the
Tars dropped their second game in a row by a final of 18-11.
Saturday's game was also the first ever SSC men's lacrosse
contest.
Rollins and FSC were pretty even in shot count, the Mocs edging
the Tars narrowly, 43-41, while FSC collected 42 ground balls
compared to Rollins' 31.
It was a physical battle all afternoon long that featured a
total of 17 penalties with Rollins committing nine of them.
Nicholas
Schultz and Adam
Stefanowicz led the Tars with a pair of goals and an assist
each while Joshua
Jenks also had two goals. Stephen
DeFlumeri finished with a goal and an assist.
Grant VanOverbeke and Dane Sorensen paced the Mocs, both
tallying five goals while VanOverbeke also added a pair of
assists.
In goal, Andrew
Sheerin played all 60 minutes for the Tars, recording 10
saves.
The Mocs jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first before Buell
got the Tars on the board with his first of the day with 6:36 left
in the first quarter.
Sorenson then answered with his first of the day just over a
minute later to again push the Mocs' lead to two goals at 3-1.
Jenks came back for Rollins, scoring his second of the year late in
the quarter to make it 3-2 heading to the second.
The Tars and the Mocs would then trade goals over the first four
and half minutes of the second, Stefanowicz and DeFlumeri both
finding the back of the net over the span, to make it 5-4,
Southern, with 9:39 left in the half.
Schultz would tie it at 5-5 at the 5:32 mar before the Mocs
rattled off four straight scores to take a 9-5 lead into the
lockeroom.
After FSC scored their fifth unanswered coming out of the half,
Stefanowicz added his second, rifling a shot from fifteen yards out
over the right shoulder of Mocs' goalie Matt Lalli to make it 10-6
early in the third.
But, unfortunately for the Tars, that was the closest they would
come the rest of the way, twice again cutting the lead to four but
couldn't slow down the Mocs attack, eventually falling, 18-11.
Rollins will be back in action on Wednesday, March
5th when the host Shorter at Barker Family Stadium. Fans
