CHARLOTTE, N.C. (February 16, 2014) - After
Winter Storm Pax pushed back the start of their 2014 season,
Rollins finally was able to take the field on Sunday, outlasting
Belmont Abbey, 9-8, in double overtime.
The game was played at the Queens University of Charlotte Sports
Complex after the recent snowstorm rendered Belmont Abbey's
Crusader Field unplayable.
Both Jack
Vonarb and Nicholas
Schultz scored a pair of goals in the win, with Schultz scoring
the game winner in the second overtime.
Senior co-captain Jack
Dever and Joshua
Jenks also pitched in with a goal and an assist apiece.
Senior Andrew
Sheerin played every minute in goal, picking up the win while
recording 12 saves.
The Tars led 2-1 after the first quarter on goals by Vonarb and
Carson
Buell before producing the only two goals of the second period
to extend their lead to 4-1 heading into the half.
Belmont Abbey then opened the third with three unanswered scores
to tie it before Rollins answered with a pair of their own,
including Schultz' first of the day with just one second left in
the quarter, to take a 6-4 lead heading to the fourth.
The Crusaders again roared back in the fourth, scoring four
straight goals to take an 8-6 lead with less than four minutes
left.
After Jenks cut the deficit to one with 1:22 left, Rollins,
which won 16 of 20 face-offs on the afternoon, claimed the ensuing
faceoff and with 46 ticks left, Vonarb netted the tying goal to
force overtime.
After a scoreless first four-minute sudden victory overtime
period, the Tars forced a Belmont Abbey turnover late in the
second, leading to Schultz' game winner with 1:14 left.
Rollins will now head home, hosting Lindenwood on Thursday, Feb.
