MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (November 9, 2014) -
After lightning in the area pushed back the start time on
Sunday, Rollins coasted to their second-straight Sunshine State
Conference Tournament championship, beating Tampa, 6-0. The title
is the third in the program's history.
As a team, the Tars needed just 13 shots to record six goals
while the Spartans managed 10 in the wet conditions.
The 2014 SSC Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Brenna
McKee, led all scorers with three goals while All-Tournament
honoree Paxton
Sickler scored two goals and also picked up an assist. Also an
All-Tournament selection, Mora
Johnson, added one goal and an assist and Emma
Jones finished with two assists.
In goal, Mary
Spring made five saves before being replaced by Sally
McGuren for the final 10 minutes. McGuren finished with one
save.
The Tars seemed to be unaffected by the delay, dominating
possession in the early going and took a 2-0 lead less than 10
minutes into the match. In the seventh minute, McKee picked up her
first score of the wet afternoon after Tampa keeper misplayed the
ball and then the senior added her second just two minutes later,
heading in a Sickler corner. The goals were McKee's 10th
and 11th of the year.
McKee would then finish off her hat trick in the 16th
minute, an SSC Tournament Championship record for fastest hat
trick, taking a pass through the box from Jones and rifled a shot
into the side netting.
Rollins took the 3-0 lead into the half and then continued the
offensive onslaught in the second period, rattling off three more
scores over a seven minute span, starting with Sickler's first of
the game in the 52nd minute.
Johnson then made it 5-0 just two minutes later before Sickler
added the finishing touches in the 59th minute.
Following the match, Emma
Bloom, Azure
Dorsey, Johnson, Sickler and McKee were honored on the 2014
All-Tournament team with McKee taking home to Most Outstanding
Player award.
The Tars will next set their sights on a seventh-straight trip
to the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament. Rollins is poised
to be one of the top-two seeds with the selection show slated for 7
p.m. Monday, Nov. 10 on NCAA.com.
