LAKELAND, Fla. (November 14, 2014) - Rollins
senior libero Collyn
Welsch earned 32 digs (15 in the first set) but Rollins (16-14,
8-7 SSC) fell to the No. 14 Florida Southern Moccasins (24-5, 14-2
SSC) by a 3-1 score (23-25, 25-17, 25-14, 25-11) Friday
evening.
Welsch's 32 digs gives her 1,944 in her career. She remains
second only to Phoebe Corder who earned 2,144 from 2008-2011.
Freshman right side/outside hitter Shannon
McDonough led the Tars with 18 kills and a .211 hitting
percentage. Junior setter April
Jackson and junior setter MaryEllen
Pole each had double-doubles with Jackson having 17 assists and
12 digs and Pole adding 15 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore defensive
specialist Abby
Jo Winsor also was in double figures with 10 digs.
Freshman outside hitter Jennifer
Ceballos added seven kills and eight digs. Freshman middle
blocker Kianna
Dieudonne contributed four kills and two blocks while senior
middle blocker Jessica
Wilson added five kills, four digs and four blocks.
As a team, Rollins finished with 37 kills, 31 errors, a .037
attack percentage, 36 assists, 87 digs and six blocks.
First set: There were 6 lead changes and 11 ties in this set.
For the rest of the match there was a combined five ties and one
lead change. Rollins had 11 kills, seven errors and hit .083. FSC
hit 13 kills and seven errors while having a .100 attack
percentage. In the first set, Rollins trailed by as much as 18-13
before coming back to tie the match at 19-all off kills by
McDonough, Dieudonne and Ceballos to go along with three FSC
errors. Trailing 23-19, The Tars came back to pull off an
incredible six straight points to win the set 25-23. It began with
an FSC service error followed by a kill by Jessica Wilson (assist
to Pole). FSC's Kate Stromberg hit an attack error followed by a
bad set by Skayhan. FSC committed two more errors by Skayhan and
Stromberg to give Rollins the upset and momentum at this point.
Welsch had a season-high 15 digs in one set.
Second set: The Tars had 10 kills, eight errors and hit. 049.
The Mocs hit .167, had 12 kills and five errors. Florida Southern
did not give up the lead in this set as the Mocs won 25-17.
Third set: The Tars opened the set aggressively taking the
opening 5-3 lead off kills by McDonough (3) and Wilson. The Tars
would give up the next 16 of 19 points and trailed 19-8. FSC won
the set 25-14 off a kill by Anna Tovo. Rollins had 10 kills, 11
errors and hit -.022. Florida Southern had 14 kills, two errors and
hit .293.
Fourth set: FSC did not give up the lead in this set as the
Moccasins jumped out to an 8-0 lead. FSC continued the pressure
winning eight of the next 12 points and led 16-4. FSC closed out
the match with a kill by Ali Skayhan to win the set 25-11. Rollins
hit .038 while having six kills and five errors. FSC hit .414, had
14 kills and just two errors.
Florida Southern's Kayshia Brady and Kendall Marotti each had 11
kills. Brady hit .364 while Marotti hit .423. Five Moccasins had
double figures in digs; Catherine Brusie led FSC with 24 digs, Kate
Stromberg added 23 digs, Ali Skayhan had 11 while Langley and
Marotti each had 10. Skayhan also had 44 assists while freshman
Anna Tovo added 10 kills. As a team, Florida Southern had 53 kills,
16 errors, hit .215 while having 51 assists, 87 digs and six
blocks.
