Sharks Too Much for Tars, Handed 15-5 Loss

WINTER PARK, Fla. (May 3, 2013) - The Rollins baseball team registered 11 hits but committed five defensive miscues as they suffered a 15-5 loss to the Nova Southeastern Sharks Friday night at Alfond Stadium.

Rollins scored their five runs in the first three frames as they plated one run in the first, one in the second and another three in the third. The Tars now fall to 22-20-1 overall and 7-11-1 in the Sunshine State Conference. Nova Southeastern now improves to 26-18 and 8-11 in the league.

Eight of the nine in the starting lineup registered at least one hit with Steve Betcherman, Thomas Kelly and Lucas Valelly each with two. Hunter Mayfield scored two runs while going 1-for-4 at the plate.

Nova Southeastern started the series opener hot as they scored five runs in the opening frame. Rollins managed to take one run back in the home half as Zach Persky crossed home plate on a Brian Lattanzi sacrifice fly.

The Shark went scoreless in the second inning but the Tars managed to push another run through. Hunter Mayfield scored his first run of the night on a RBI single.

In the top of the third, NSU extended their lead to 8-2 but was cut down in the bottom of the inning as the Tars scored three runs. Betcherman led off with a single to left and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Sharks. He then came around to score on a Lattanzi base hit. Lattanzi scored the second run of the inning on another base hit, followed by the final run by Mayfield, who scored on the Tars' fourth hit of the frame.

NSU held the Tars scoreless in the last six innings of play as they scored seven runs from the six through ninth innings.

Rollins starter Anthony Figliolia (5-5) was charged with the loss as he allowed eight runs on 10 hits in three innings of work.

Vinnie Contaldi earned the win as he went 7.2 innings. Contaldi struck out six and did not allow a walk while allowing five runs on 10 hits.

Rollins will wrap up the series on Saturday, May 4 with the final two home games of the season beginning at 11 a.m. The Rollins Athletic Department will also be honoring six graduating seniors before the start of Game 1.
