LAKELAND, Fla. (May 10, 2013) - Rollins split
the final doubleheader of the 2013 season taking game one 7-5 and
suffering a 10-0 loss in the rubber match Friday afternoon at
Historic Henley Field.
In game one of Friday's doubleheader, the Tars used a five-run
sixth inning to lift them past the Mocs. Rollins batted around in
the inning, scoring the five runs on five hits.
Brett
Flutie led off the inning with a single down the left field
line and then advanced to second on grounder. Another base hit
moved Flutie to third and then came around to score on a Hunter
Mayfield RBI single. Mayfield and Matt
Hendricks scored the second and third runs of the frame on a
2-RBI single by Thomas
Kelly. Steve
Betcherman and Kelly then scored the final runs of the inning
on a Persky 2-RBI single.
Florida Southern took the early lead in the opening frame
scoring one run, followed by another three in the bottom third.
Rollins slowly closed the gap, plating one run in the second and
another run in the top third.
Mocs starter Alex Norris held the Tars scoreless through the
next two innings before a crucial 5-run sixth gave the Tars the
lead.
Pitching in relief for Rollins was Eric
Morse as he picked up his sixth save of the year. The
right-hander came in to pitch in the sixth and held FSC to one run
on four hits. Starter Taylor
Smith earned his seventh win of the season tossing six innings,
while striking out eight.
Eight of the nine Rollins starters registered at least one hit.
Hendricks added two runs on the day while Persky and Kelly each
drove in a pair of runs.
In the rubber match and final game of the 2013 season, Rollins
struggled to get on the board as they allowed five runs in the
first. The Tar went through three arms, including starting pitcher
Isaiah
Sakany. The Mocs tacked on another four runs in the third,
while keeping the Tars off the board.
Rollins allowed 11 hits while only scattering five of their
own. Steve
Betcherman was 3-for-3 in game two while Boston
Langley and Cam
Brown had the teams remaining two base hits.
Sakany was charged with the loss in 0.2 innings on the mound.
Sakany allowed four runs on three hits.
Brian Johnson was the pitcher of record in five innings of
work. He struck out two, walked one and did not allow a run on
three hits.
Rollins concludes the 2013 season with a record of 24-23-1 and a
9-14-1 record in the Sunshine State Conference.
