WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 28, 2013) - Erica
Pagliarulo became Rollins' all-time leader in goals scored and
sent her fellow seniors out in style as the third-ranked Tars beat
10th-ranked Florida Southern 18-12 Sunday afternoon.
The win ends Rollins' regular season at 15-1 while FSC drops to
10-3. The Tars will next await its postseason fate when NCAA
selections are announced May 5. Rollins entered the day ranked
second in the South Region with the top four teams earning
bids.
Pagliarulo and fellow senior Sophie
Townsend each netted five goals to lead Rollins' offense. Caroline
Lamere totaled three goals and an assist while Mo
Imel scored twice to go along with two assists. Tyler
Thomas, Kelly
Thayer and Katie
Palasz also found the back of the net for the Tars.
Pagliarulo tied the career school record with a tally 10 minutes
in and, with 12:13 left in the first, scored for 155th
time in her career to stand alone atop the charts. By the end of
the day, she set the record at 158 career goals.
Elyse De
Lisle was her normal solid self in goal, racking up five
saves.
Megan Asper led Southern with four goals while Danielle LaDuca
added three. Katie Hammerer took the loss, but earned 13 saves.
The two rivals traded goals over the first 14 minutes as an
Asper tally tied the game for the fourth time, 4-4. Townsend and
Pagiarulo scored back to back to put the Tars up 6-4 only to have
the Mocs come back and tie the score at six with 7:26 left in the
first.
Rollins then went on a 3-0 run to take a 9-6 lead and momentum
heading into intermission. FSC, however, took a little steam out of
the Tars roll, scoring with one second left to make the halftime
score 9-7.
Imel quickly got the score back early in the second half, but
again Rollins couldn't shake the Mocs as an Apser free position
goal with 19:42 to play cut the Tars lead to 11-10.
The Tars then dug in on defense and amped up the offense as
Pagliarulo, Townsend and Pagliarulo again gave the Tars a 14-10
advantage three minutes later.
Rollins then kept Southern at bay the rest of the day, not
allowing it guests any closer than three with less than six minutes
to play, while leading by as many as six.
