WALTHAM, Mass. (April 28, 2013) - After taking
a one-run lead in the top of eighth, the Rollins baseball team
allowed two runs to cross in the bottom of the ninth, dropping a
heartbreaking 3-2 decision to Bentley Sunday afternoon.
Rollins had double the hits compared to the home team with
leadoff man Zach
Persky notching a pair of base knocks. Persky also had one of
the Tars' runs with Yuta
Okazaki scoring the other. The Tars now fall to 22-19-1 while
Bentley improves to 25-16.
The Falcons held Rollins scoreless through five straight innings
as Bentley took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. In the top
of the sixth, a sacrifice bunt by Steve
Betcherman drove in Yuta
Okazaki for the first Tars run, which evened the score.
In the top of the eighth, Zach
Persky led off the frame on a single up the middle and then
stole second. A sacrifice bunt moved him over to third and then
scored on a Brian
Lattanzi RBI single.
Rollins starter Taylor
Smith faced two batters in the ninth before being replaced by
Eric
Morse. Smith was charged with the loss as he allowed three
runs on three hits while striking out six.
Scott Lueders earned the win for Bentley as he pitched two
innings in relief. Lueders allowed one run on four hits.
Rollins will return to Sunshine State Conference action on
Friday, May 3 as they host the Nova Southeastern in the Tars' final
home series of the season. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
