BOCA RATON, Fla. (April 20, 2013) -
Fourth seeded Rollins defeated the third-seed Lynn in the SSC
Women's Tennis Championship 3rd Place Match on Saturday, 5-2. The
win over Lynn is Rollins' first over the Fighting Knights in
program history.
The Tars found themselves in the third place match after a
semifinal loss to top-seed Barry. Lynn fell to No. 2 seed Saint Leo
in their semifinal match.
After doubles play, Rollins led 2-1 after wins in the No. 2 and
No. 3 matches. In the No. 2 match, sisters Lisa
Loft and Ashley
Loft defeated Alina Jane and Andrea Berkova, 8-5, while Mariana
Salvador and Carli
Davis beat Valentina Chacin and Aleks Vukadinovic, 8-1, in the
No. 3 spot. Both Rollins pairs are 7-3 in their last ten
matches.
In singles, the Tars benefitted from a forfeit in the No. 6
spot, giving them a 3-1 advantage, before wins by Salvador and Callie
Whitlock in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively, clinched
the match. Salvador beat Vukadinovic 6-2, 6-2
while Whitlock
downed Chacin 6-0, 6-0.
Rollins lone loss in singles was in the No. 1 slot where Elissa
DeCampli fell to #4 Val Confalonieri 6-0, 6-0.
The Tars, who are currently rank fourth in the south region, now
await the NCAA DII Women's Tennis Selection Show on Tuesday, April
23rd. The show, which will air on NCAA.com at 8:00pm ET,
will reveal the teams moving on to the postseason.
