WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 9, 2013) - After
opening the season with a win four days ago, the Rollins baseball
team was unable to continue the momentum as they dropped Saturday's
doubleheader to the No. 13 West Florida Argos. The Tars suffered
an 8-7 heartbreaker in game one and fell 3-0 in the nightcap.
In game one of the doubleheader, the Tars took an early lead on
the 13th-ranked Argos as they scored a pair of runs in
the second inning and another three in the third to take a 5-2
lead.
Sophomore Brett
Mueller got the start for the Tars and held the Argos to four
hits and two runs in five innings of work.
The sixth inning spelled disaster for the Tars as Rollins put
three different arms on the mound to face West Florida. The Argos
were able to score four runs in that stretch to take a 6-5 lead.
In his season debut, Ryan
McDonald recorded the final two outs of the inning, giving up
one run on one hit.
Rollins answered back in the bottom half of the inning, plating
a pair of runs to take a 7-6 lead. Hunter
Mayfield recorded his third triple of the season, with two
outs, and drove in Evan
Rivera and Steve
Betcherman.
Junior Eric
Morse (1-0) was the final Tars pitcher to take the mound and
worked 3.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits to take the loss
for Rollins. Morse gave up one run in the seventh inning, but kept
the Argos at bay in the final two innings of regulation.
Senior southpaw Josh Tanski (1-0) allowed two runs on five hits,
striking out three, to earn the win for the Argos. Tanksi worked
3.1 innings while Matt Vollenweider picked up his second save of
the season, striking out four.
Steve
Betcherman led the Tars at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance
with a double, two RBI and one run scored.
In the Tars' nightcap, Taylor
Smith pitched a 6.0 inning, two hit scoreless game. Smith
recorded four strikeouts and walked one to earn the no-decision.
Jack
Murray stepped in to close the 7-inning affair but gave up the
go-ahead runs for the Argos as he got charged with the loss.
Brandon
Curson, Yuta
Okazaki and Boston
Langley each tallied a hit for the Tars.
UWF's Drew Bryson picked up the win for the Argos in 6.0 innings
of work as he threw a three-hit shutout. Bobby Parker pitched 1.0
inning in relief and earned his first save of the year.
The Tars will wrap up the weekend series with the No. 13 West
