TAMPA, Fla. (December 5, 2013) - Senior Camille
Indest recorded 21 kills to lead three Tars in double-digit
kills, as the Rollins volleyball team defeated second-seed and
19th-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic in a five-set (20-25,
25-18, 22-25, 26-24, 15-5) thriller Thursday afternoon at the Bob
Martinez Athletic Center.
Rollins (23-10) defeated the Sailfish in a five-set thriller
earlier in the season in West Palm Beach after being down 2-0.
This time around, Rollins came back from being down 2-1 to win
26-24 in the fourth set.
The Tars came back from a six-point deficit in the fourth set,
17-11, to come within two at the 19-17 mark, forcing a Palm Beach
Atlantic timeout. Rollins slowly inched their way to a 24-all tie
on 5-2 run. Back-to-back kills by Indest secured the fourth set
win to head into overtime.
Having seen this before, Rollins was hot out of the gates in the
fifth set as they were quick to record the first point on a kill by
Indest. Each team traded points to start the set, but after a
3-all tie on a kill by Christina Alessi, the Tars pulled away on a
5-1 run to lead 8-4.
Palm Beach Atlantic (29-4) recorded their final point at the 8-5
mark on a kill by Faith Rohn as the Tars closed out the match on a
7-0 run, 15-5.
Indest led all scorers with 21 kills, while Kelly
Merideth notched a career-best 17 kills. Ruth
Harrington added 13 kills with 10 digs.
Defensively, Collyn
Welsch led with 25 digs, while Jessica
Wilson added five blocks at the net.
In the opening set, Rollins struggled to find their niche as
they dropped a 25-20 decision to the 19th-ranked
Sailfish. The Tars jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but a 5-0 run
by their counterparts evened the score at 5-all.
Rollins was unable to keep pace with the Sailfish as they
continued to extend their lead throughout the frame. The Tars were
held to a .154 hitting percentage, while three notched at least
three kills.
In the second set, the Tars were able to even the match as they
took a 25-18 win over PBA. Rollins hit .333 and held the Sailfish
to a .118 hitting percentage. The frame included three ties and
one lead change with the final tie coming at the 15-all mark by the
Sailfish.
The Tars then pushed a 5-0 run to force a PBA timeout, 20-15.
Senior Camille
Indest led all scorers with four kills in the set. Rollins
handled the ball carefully as they committed only four errors,
while the Sailfish doubled with eight.
Rollins dropped yet another close one in the third set, falling
25-22. The Tars were held to a .156 hitting percentage despite
Merideth's and Indest's five and four-kill performance.
Christina Alessi led the No. 19 Palm Beach Atlantic with 21
kills and seven blocks. Becca Acevedo added 53 assists to the
offense, while Melissa Buckingham recorded 40 digs.
Rollins will now advance to the second round of the NCAA
Division II South Region Tournament. The Tars will face
sixth-seeded West Florida on Friday, Dec. 6 at 4:30 p.m. Fans can
