No. 25 Rollins Fends off Fort Valley in Opener

FORT VALLEY, Ga. (November 8, 2013) - Emmalee Schill had a career day and two other Tars recorded double-doubles as 25th-ranked Rollins beat Fort Valley State 78-71 Friday in both team's season openers.

The contest was part of the Sunshine State Conference-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover in Fort Valley, Ga.

Schill led Rollins (1-0) with a career-high 20 points, shooting 5-of-8 from the field (2-of-3, 3-pointers) and 8-of-12 at the free throw line. The junior also posted four rebounds, two assists and a career-best five blocks.

Senior Sarah Blackburn recorded a double-double for the fifth time, posting 15 points and a career-best 13 rebounds. She also started last season with a double-double, getting 11 and 10 against Puerto Rico Mayaguez.

Sarah Taylor scored her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Ashley Losch chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.

Antionna Jefferson hit six 3-pointers and scored 22 points to lead Fort Valley (0-1). Shytina Harley netted 17 with Carmenonique Dawson chipping in 16 points and six rebounds.

Rollins rained 3-pointers to start and led 26-16 midway through the first. A solo five-point run by Tanaya Jones later in the period pushed the Tars lead to 45-23 with two minutes to play in the half.

The Wildcats then ended the first with on a 12-0 run and cut the Tars lead to 45-35 at intermission.

FVSU closed to within seven early in the second before a Schill jumper with 13:56 to play put Rollins on top 57-41.

In the waning moments, Jefferson hit from long range for Fort Valley and closed the gap to 72-63 with 1:57 left. They then began to foul and the Tars hit just 4-of-7, allowing another Jefferson triple to make it a 76-71 game with 20-seconds left.

Taylor then made good on two from the line with five seconds left, closing the door on the 'Cats.

Rollins dominated the glass, out rebounding Fort Valley 54-27, including a 17-4 edge on the offensive end. Both team's shot 41 percent from the field while the Tars went 23-35 from the free throw line and FVSU 13-23.

The Tars will next meet Albany State at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8 on the final day of the SSC-SIAC Crossover. Fans can follow live stats at RollinsSports.com.
