ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (October 4, 2013) -
Rollins battled the toughest they've had to this season as they
defeated the Eckerd Tritons 3-0 (28-26, 25-19, 25-23) in thrilling
fashion at the McArthur Center.
Rollins now improves to 12-3 on the season and 2-1 in Sunshine
State Conference play while Eckerd falls to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in
conference action.
Three Tars in double-figure kills led the way in tonight's
victory. Kelly
Merideth registered a season-best 12 kills with four digs and
three blocks. Camille
Indest added 11 kills with three blocks while Aroon
Duncanson chipped in with 10 kills and two blocks.
Defensively, junior Collyn
Welsch led the way with 30 digs while the team tallied eight
blocks.
In the start of the opening set, the Tars and the Tritons traded
points, but a 6-0 run by Eckerd gave the Tritons a 14-8 lead.
Rollins rallied from behind, going on a 4-1 run to trail by two,
forcing an Eckerd timeout at the 21-19 mark. The score tied six
more times before the Tars scored back-to-back points on kills by
Kate
Stefanski and Jessica
Wilson to win the first set 28-26.
Rollins trailed the start of the second set but slowly made
their way back using a 6-1 run to lead 14-12. The score tied on
two more occasions before the Tars went on a 4-0 run to lead
20-16. The end of that rally was a momentum changer for Rollins,
as the block by Aroon
Duncanson became a controversial call. The Tars closed out the
frame scoring four straight points, taking the set 25-19.
The third set was nothing different than the first two as
Rollins trailed the Tritons by as many as six at the 21-15 mark.
The Tars were able to regroup themselves on the court and went on a
10-2 run to close out the third set with a 25-23 win to sweep the
Tritons.
Lindsay Biggs and Katarina Milojevic led Eckerd with 10 kills
apiece.
Rollins will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 5 as they face
the Saint Leo Lions at 4 p.m. Fans can catch the action live on the
