LAKELAND, Fla. (October 26, 2013) - The Rollins
volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 12-25, 17-25) loss to
the Florida Southern Moccasins Saturday afternoon at Jenkins Field
House.
The Tars now drop to 17-6 overall and 4-4 in the Sunshine State
Conference, while Florida Southern improves to 17-7 overall and 6-2
in conference action.
Camille
Indest led the Tars with 10 kills, three digs and one block.
Jessica
Wilson added nine kills, eight digs and three blocks, while Ruth
Harrington chipped in with eight kills and four digs.
As a team, Rollins was held to a .117 hitting percentage, the
second lowest this season and third straight match the Tars were
held below a .200 attack percentage.
In the opening set, Rollins was off to a hot start against the
Mocs as they jumped out to a 6-2 lead. The Tars then extended
their lead to 15-8 on a 6-1 run. Rollins remained steady through
the set, taking the opening frame 25-17 on a service ace by Jessica
Wilson.
The Tars weren't as reluctant in the second set as they dropped
a 25-22 decision to the Mocs. Rollins committed only two errors in
the second frame, hitting an improved. 240 with 14 kills. Wilson
recorded four kills with two blocks in the set.
In the third set, Rollins was unable to stop the Mocs as Florida
Southern (.355) held the Tars to a -.077 hitting percentage. FSC
rattled off five straight points to start the set, forcing a
Rollins timeout. The Tars were able to side-out on a kill by Kelly
Merideth and come within three on a kill by a Ruth
Harrington. Rollins dropped the third 25-12.
Rollins made it a closer game in the fourth set, despite falling
25-17. Rollins was outhit .457-.158 in the final set. The Mocs
and Tars traded points to begin the frame, tying the score on six
occasions, including four lead changes. After a 9-all tie by FSC,
the Mocs got some wind behind them taking down the Tars to win the
match.
Three Mocs finished with double-figure kills as Kate Stromberg
led with 14 kills. Kayshia Brady and Brindl Langley each tallied
12 kills apiece. Catherine Brusie recorded a team-best 23
digs.
Saturday closed out the first half of conference play. Rollins
will begin the second round on Friday, Nov. 1 as they travel to
Miami Shores for a 7 p.m. match-up against the Barry Buccaneers.
