WINTER PAR, Fla. (March 8, 2012) - As the Tars
entered the mid-point of the 64th Annual Rollins College
Baseball Week event, Rollins produced four multiple-run innings to
come out the victors in a 14-3 win over Wayne State Thursday
night.
Led by Anthony
Figliolia, Sean
Reilly and Brandon
Curson with two hits off the Warriors, the Tars combined for 14
runs on 11 hits, the seventh time this season Rollins tallies
double-figure hits and fifth time the Tars score in
double-digits.
After only producing three home runs the entire season, Curson,
along with Kevin
Mager hit multiple-run blasts. Mager hit the first in the
bottom of the fourth blasting a two-run homer over the rightfield
wall. In the bottom of the eighth, Curson stepped up to the plate
and hit a two-out three-run home run that barely cleared the
leftfield fence.
Rollins (12-5) opened up the contest with a five-run opening
frame as Wayne State starter Chris Waha was unable to record an out
and was charged with the loss. Waha walked three and allowed five
runs on two hits.
The Tars put up another two runs in the third as Hunter
Mayfield plated Brian
Lattanzi and Sean
Reilly on a two-RBI single. Rollins then tacked on another two
runs in the fourth on Mager's home run to give the Tars a 9-0
lead.
Wayne State (3-1) broke up the possible shutout in the top of
the sixth as Chris Gebara scored on a Rollins defensive miscue.
Rollins then responded in the home half of the inning with one
run. Reilly crossed the plate on a Warriors wild pitch.
With Rollins up 10-2 heading into the eighth inning, Curson's
three-run blast, along with another run by Mager left Rollins at
14-2 and was the final damage done by the Tars. Wayne State was
able to plate a final run in the top of the ninth, 14-3.
Mager was 1-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs, a home run and two
walks. Curson went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, a run scored and a
home run.
Along with the Tars offensive explosion, Mike
Howard (2-1) pitched himself into a win tossing a career-high
eight innings allowing two runs on three hits and striking out
five.
Rollins will be back in action Friday, March 9 as the Tars host
the Indianapolis Greyhounds at 12 Noon, followed by a 6 p.m.
contest against the West Chester Golden Rams.
