SAN ANTONIO, Texas (February 2, 2012) -
Senior Monica Meadows hit a single to center to drive in a pair
of runs to lift the No. 11 Tars, 3-2, past No. 16 Angelo State
Thursday evening to open up the 2012 season. Angelo State was the
first of five teams the Tars will face at the San Antonio ISD
Sports Complex.
Meadows finished the day 1-for-4 with two RBIs, while senior
Hope Bitzer (1-0) picked up her first win of the season in seven
complete innings of action. The right-handed hurler fanned five
and gave up one earned run.
Newcomer Aimee Halpin, along with Lawna Hunter, Meadows, and
Krista Rodden each notched a hit off the Rams.
As the Tars went scoreless through the first six innings of
play, Rollins came alive in the bottom of the seventh as they got
two on base on back-to-back hit by pitches. The Tars loaded the
bases with a Halpin slow-roller down the first base line moving
Hilary Brown and Hannah Lovestrand over to second and third.
With Hunter at the plate, the right fielder hit a sacrifice fly
to right to score Brown, 2-1. Lovestrand then stole second, with
Meadows at the plate, to place her in scoring position. On the
next pitch, Meadows got a base knock to score both Lovestrand and
Halpin for the come-from-behind 3-2 victory over No. 16 Angelo
State.
ASU scored their first run in the opening frame as the Rams
leadoff batter scored on a Tars' throwing error. Angelo State's
second run came in the third inning as Morgan Spearman scored on a
RBI single.
Rollins has started 1-0 in each of the past eight seasons and
look to improve on their record as they face Cameron on Friday,
February 3 at 12 noon CT / 1 p.m. ET. Fans can follow the action
