GAFFNEY, S.C. (February 25, 2012)- The Rollins
women's lacrosse team engineered a huge upset against third-ranked
Limestone, Saturday afternoon, by a score of 11-10. The Tars ended
last year with a huge win against the perennial powerhouse and
provided late game heroics to claim another victory in the latest
chapter.
The first half saw the Tars seize control and hold a lead before
the Saints would rally and claim the lead at the break. Mo
Imel started the scoring for the Tars and had help from Erica
Pagliarulo to give Rollins an early advantage.
Limestone would come back and cut the lead and tie the game
before ending the half with a one goal lead. The Tars were in
control of most of the statistical categories at the break, but
found themselves down to the home team.
Coming out of the break both teams went back and forth with
scoring attacks with the Tars able to gain their markers in
bunches. Rollins used their scoring and defense to gain a bit of
momentum heading into the waning moments of the contest.
Ginevra
Czech put the Tars up at 14:14 in the second half, a lead which
only lasted until the 13:33 mark when Brittany Howard came up with
a goal on the free position attempt for Limestone. Both teams would
battle the remainder of the game with both goalies coming up
big.
With 1:21 left on the clock, Sarah
Ann Showell gave the Tars the go-ahead goal over the Saints.
Limestone would not go away and mounted a furious charge, but Elyse
De Lisle and the defense held strong until Sylvia Queener
garnered a free position attempt with four seconds left in the
game. Queener took a shot that was saved by De Lisle, preserving
the one goal victory for the Tars.
Sophie
Townsend, Czech, Pagliarulo and Kelley all tallied multi-goal
efforts with Kelly also picking up two assists. Ann Townsend and
Imel also tallied one goal apiece to round out the scoring for the
blue and gold.
Rollins will head home to face Mercyhurst on February 2 with
game time slated 7 p.m. at Barker Family Stadium at Cahall-Sandspur
Field.
