SAINT LEO, Fla. (November 9, 2012) - With four
matches left in the regular-season, the Rollins volleyball team
added one more to the win column as they defeated the Saint Leo
Lions 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 29-27) Friday afternoon at The
Bowman Center.
Led by the 15 kills from Camille
Indest, the Tars improve to 16-13 overall and 7-6 in the SSC
while Saint Leo falls to 10-15 and 2-11 in league play. Along with
Indest's double-figure kills was Megan
Hodges with 13 and Kelly
Merideth with 11.
April
Jackson and MaryEllen
Pole continue to split their role at the setter position as
Jackson tallied 27 assists and Pole 16. Defensively, Rollins had
three Tars post double-figure digs as Christina
Carracino led the trio with 17. Merideth, recording her fourth
double-double of the season, added 11 digs while Jackson chipped in
with 10.
In the Tars' 25-20 win in the opening frame, Rollins was off to
a slow start but was able to gain momentum after tying the score at
8-all on a Hodges kill. An Indest service ace gave the Tars a
one-point advantage but was taken back as Saint Leo evened the
score at 9-all. A kill from Jessica
Wilson opened a 4-0 run for the Tars for a 13-9 lead. The Tars
never relinquished their lead and closed out the set on a 4-1
run.
The Tars and the Lions made it a game in the second set after
Rollins trailed the Lions and then made up the deficit. The set
saw five ties and two lead changes with the final tie coming at the
22-all mark on a Wilson kill. Rollins stayed within reach on a
defensive miscue by the Lions but Saint Leo secured the win on a
Meghan Donovan kill, 25-23.
In the third set, Rollins trailed early on but made their way
from behind to tie the score at 8-all on a SLU ball handling
error. A Wilson kill gave the Tars the lead and paved the way for
the Tars' 25-21 win.
Rollins had to fight a little harder in the fourth and final set
as the Lions and Tars took the score to 29-27 in favor of Rollins.
Unlike the previous sets, Rollins jumped out to an early lead but
was unable to hold onto it. The Tars slowly chipped away at the
lead and tied the score at 24-all on a Hodges ace. The score would
tie three more times before Rollins would manage to pull away on
back-to-back kills from Indest and Hodges.
Senior Sami Vierk led the Lions with 17 kills while Molly
Alexander added 20 digs to the Lions defense.
Rollins will return to play on Saturday, Nov. 10 as they head to
Lakeland, Fla. to face the Florida Southern Moccasins. Match time
is set for 4 p.m.
