SAINT LEO, Fla. (April 21, 2011)- The Rollins
softball team swept the Saint Leo Lions in doubleheader action,
Thursday evening to earn another series win, 7-0 and 6-0. With the
pair of victories, Rollins improves to 43-2 overall and 21-1 in SSC
play. The Tars continued to rely on their hot hitting and clutch
pitching to claim the victories.
Game one of the doubleheader saw both pitchers shutdown the
opposing lineup for two innings before the Tars broke through on
the scoreboard in the top half of the third inning. The Tars posted
four runs in the inning and took advantage of two Saint Leo
miscues. Veronica
Alred delivered an RBI single to give the Tars a two run
advantage. One more fielding miscue allowed the Tars to score two
runs to stretch the lead to four at the end of the inning.
The Tars came back in the fourth to score another run with Amber
Pederson collecting an RBI single to push the advantage to five
runs. Rollins was not done, with Veronica
Alred delivering the last two runs in the fifth inning via a
two run home run. Alred was given new life after another Lions
miscue kept the at-bat alive. Alred took advantage and blasted the
next pitch over the center field wall.
Hope
Bitzer collected her 17th victory of the season with
a three hit complete game shutout against the high powered Saint
Leo offense.
Alred provided the spark for the offense, going 3-for-4 with
three RBIs to lead all hitters. Rollins also received strong
efforts from Jessica
Moreland and Lawna
Hunter with the duo combining to go 4-for-7 to help set the
table.
Game two of the doubleheader saw Rollins jump immediately on the
scoreboard, tallying three runs to gain the early advantage.
Moreland and Bitzer both doubled to drive in three runs combined to
finish out the scoring for the Tars in the inning.
The scoring continued in the second inning with the Tars posting
two more runs, including an RBI triple from Monica
Meadows. Pederson also tallied an RBI with a ground out to
second base to push the advantage to five runs through two innings
of play.
Rollins plated their final run of the game off a Meadows double
down the left field line to increase the advantage to six runs.
Bitzer and Meadows ended the day with two RBIs apiece along with
Pederson and Moreland each collecting an RBI on the evening.
This would be all Kirsten
Frame would need to close out the game with a victory. Frame
scattered four hits and punched out 10 batters en route to her
15th victory of the season.
Rollins will finish out the regular season and series tomorrow
at noon with a single game with Saint Leo.
