WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 26, 2011) - Rollins
combined for 14 hits and nine runs in the Tars' first home
conference series against the Nova Southeastern Sharks to drop a
14-9 decision in game one and were shutout 5-0 in the night cap
Saturday afternoon at Alfond Stadium.
Zach Persky and Greg Smith were the only Tars to notch multiple
hits in both games. Persky totaled four hits and an RBI, while
Greg Smith went 3-6 on the day with all three hits coming in game
one. Smith did all his damage in game one collecting his fifth
career home run, to go along two RBIs.
In game one, Rollins made a huge comeback after trailing 10-0
after four innings of play. The NSU Sharks scored six in the
second, three in the third, and one in the fourth.
Rollins cut the deficit by almost in half scoring four runs in
the fifth after Sharks starting pitcher Isaac Hicks loaded the
bases. Max Pavy drove in the first runs on a one-out double
scoring Greg Smith and Chris Holloway. Pavy, along with Josh Band,
scored the remaining runs on a two-out single by Tony Brunetti.
Max Pavy and Chris Holloway would score once again in the
seventh and eighth to make the score 13-6 Nova.
NSU would score one final time in the ninth before Rollins
scored three in the bottom of the ninth. Rollins' final three runs
came on Greg Smith's first home run of the year to cap the
night.
Right-handed hurler Garrett Yount (5-2) picked up his second
loss of the year and first in conference play with 2 2/3 innings of
work. Yount gave up nine hits and five earned runs. NSU's Isaac
Hicks got the nod tossing six complete innings and giving up four
runs on eight hits.
In game two, Zach Persky got half of the Tars' hits going 2-3.
Kevin Mager and Sean Reilly were the only others to get hits off
the Sharks.
Mike Howard (3-1) took the loss for Rollins, his first, on five
complete innings on the mound. Howard struck out three and gave up
two earned runs. NSU starter Sean Tighe (3-4) got his third
victory of the year pitching his first complete game. Tighe fanned
10 Rollins batters and struck out the side in the sixth.
Rollins will close out the weekend series with Nova Southeastern
on Sunday when the Tars square off with the Sharks at 1 p.m. For
