FLORENCE, S.C. (March 12, 2011)- Behind
a no-hitter from junior Hope
Bitzer, Rollins pulled out a 2-0 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne in
the Francis Marion Patriot Invitational, Friday afternoon. With the
victory the Tars improve to an impressive 18-1 mark overall. Since
dropping their lone game in Hawaii, the Tars have rattled off 15
consecutive wins to hold the No.17 spot in the NFCA National
Top-25.
The Bears came into the game ranked 15th in the
nation and boasted a 15-5 mark before their matchup with the
Tars.
Bitzer got the better of her counterpart, Dawon Millwood, as the
junior transfer collected 11 strikeouts on the afternoon with one
walk and no hits to complete the no-hitter.
Rollins scraped up just enough offense to outlast the Bears,
with Millwood only allowing five hits to the explosive offensive of
the Tars. Lawna
Hunter provided the Tars with two clutch plays, including a
perfect sacrifice bunt that helped the Tars position the winning
run in the second inning. Hunter struck again in the sixth with a
clutch double to give the Tars an insurance run heading into the
top of the seventh.
Bitzer also helped her cause in the batter's box, collecting one
hit on the afternoon along with Hilary
Brown, Jessica
Moreland and Amber
Pederson all tallying singles.
The Tars received clutch hitting, excellent defense and stellar
pitching to win a close game, something that will benefit the Tars
in their quest for the NCAA South Region Tournament in May.
Rollins will continue their play in the Francis Marion Patriot
Invitational with two games on Saturday against Brevard and West
Liberty, before finishing up with the host Francis Marion on
Sunday.
