Tars Sweep Doubleheader with UPR-Bayamon

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico (February 11, 2011) - The Rollins Tars baseball team played some astounding baseball as they bounced back from last weekend's home opener and swept Friday's doubleheader against Puerto Rico-Bayamon. Rollins took game one 11-6 and the second 9-2.

With the pair of wins, Rollins improves to 2-2 for the season.

In game one, Rollins found themselves trailing early on as they gave up four runs in the third frame to put UPRB up 4-2. John Avanzino scored Rollins' first run of the day on solo shot to right center as he led-off the second inning. Boston Langley scored the next run after reaching on a hit-by-pitch.

The Tars slowly made their way back into contention scoring a lone run in the fifth and two in the sixth. Avanzino evened the score at 6-6 on a RBI double by Langley and a RBI single by Nick Adams in the top of the eighth gave the Tars the final lead of the game.

Rollins had an explosive eighth inning scoring five runs to secure the first win of the season. Freshman Adam Ogburn made his collegiate debut as he closed out game one. Ogburn struck out one batter and walked one, while giving up one hit.

Center fielder Chris Holloway finished 3-for-6 with a double, a run, and an RBI. Senior John Avanzino went 4-for-5 with four runs, a home run, a pair of doubles, and three RBIs.

In game two, Rollins led throughout the seven-inning contest as Garrett Yount pitched his first complete game of the season. Yount fanned two and walked one.

Rollins' big run came in the third inning with a five-run third. Third baseman Kevin Mager hit a bases-clearing triple and scored on a throwing error by the left fielder. Mager scored Avanzino and Langley. The Tars recorded 15 hits and scored nine runs, while committing one error.

Holloway had another great game going 4-for-5 with two stolen bags, two runs, and an RBI. Avanzino went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run.

Rollins will close out their Puerto Rico trip with a doubleheader against Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m. Atlantic Standard time.
