WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 4, 2011)-
The Rollins men's soccer team kept their run through the
Sunshine State Conference Tournament with a dominating win over
Florida Tech, 3-0, Friday morning. The victory allowed the Tars to
claim the first spot in the SSC Tournament Championship game on
Sunday at 1 p.m. With the victory Rollins improves to 14-3 overall,
while Florida Tech ends their season at 9-6-1.
The 18th-ranked Tars wasted no time scoring as Rafa Faria found the
back of the net off a perfect cross from Nick Sowers. The duo
combined perfectly through the midfield and carried the play all
the way into the attacking third and finished it off with a picture
perfect goal.
Rollins controlled the rest of the half outshooting the Panthers by
four shots. Keneil Baker and the Tars did not face much pressure
early in the first half, but Florida Tech had two shots that forced
Baker to make two saves.
Both teams would enter the half with the Tars holding the one goal
advantage. Rollins nearly came away with a couple tallies in the
opening 45 minutes, but were thwarted by the Panthers backline and
Brentton Muhammad.
Rollins came out aggressive in the second half and were looking to
stretch the lead to two goals if possible. The Tars would not be
denied as Faria again found the back of the net after Blade Zych
forced a turnover and quickly found the feet of the junior, who
slotted it past Muhammad.
With a two goal lead the Tars kept the pressure up and were
motivated to keep the clean sheet as the defense held the Panthers
to two shots with only one coming on frame.
The Tars salted the game away with the final goal coming in the
88th minute as the freshly inserted Austin McDaniel found a
streaking Rob Crowley inside the box. Crowley was able to make his
moved and deliver a hard strike past the outstretched arms of
Muhammad.
The Tars pitched another clean sheet on the season and have built
up a large amount of confidence heading into a showdown with Barry
in the tournament final on Sunday.
Rollins will take the pitch against Barry on Sunday for the SSC
Conference Tournament on Sunday at 1 p.m.
