MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (October 7, 2011) - The
Rollins Tars volleyball team dominated the Barry Buccaneers in
straight sets (25-16, 25-22, 25-23) Friday night at the Health and
Sports Center.
The Tars were led by Megan Hodges and Collyn Welsch with 11
kills each, while Hodges recorded her seventh double-double of the
season with 12 digs. Rollins outhit the Bucs .229-.106 and led in
almost all statistical categories.
In game one, Rollins (12-7, 5-2) jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead
on a block assist by Kelly Merideth and Camille Indest, forcing a
Barry timeout. The Tars managed to hold onto their lead, only
allowing the Bucs to come within four at the 14-10 mark. A block
by Merideth and Jessica Wilson capped the scoring for Rollins in
game one. Rollins outhit the Bucs .281-.056 in the first set.
Game two brought more of a challenge to the Tars as the set saw
14 ties and six lead changes. The Tars started off the second set
scoring five straight points, but allowed Barry (7-7, 1-7) to take
an 8-7 lead on a Rollins error. With the final tie coming at the
22-all mark on another Rollins error, the Tars gathered themselves
and blocked a ball by Tania Torres (block assist: Merideth,
Wilson), while a kill by Welsch secured the 25-22 win for Rollins.
Welsch led the team with five kills in the second set.
Rollins fought from behind in the final set trailing early on; a
service ace by Kelly Merideth evened the score at 13-all. With the
score tying six more times, a kill by Welsch put Rollins up by one,
24-23. Hodges tallied the game-winning kill to sweep the Bucs with
a 25-23 win.
The Tars will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 8 as Rollins
heads to Boca Raton to face the Lynn Fighting Knights. First serve
