Tars Fall to the Hands of the Tritons

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (October 29, 2011) - The Rollins Tars volleyball team fell to the hands of the Eckerd Tritons in five (14-25, 25-20, 25-21, 22-25, 10-15), snapping an 11-match win streak Saturday evening at the McArthur Center.

Up two games to one in the fourth set, Rollins took a late lead at the 19-18 mark on a block by Collyn Welsch. The Tars were unable to hold onto their lead allowing Eckerd to score four consecutive points for a 22-19 lead. Eckerd took the fourth set 25-22.

The Tars struggled in the opening of the fifth set as the Tritons jumped out to a 4-1 lead. Rollins came as close as one at the 7-6 mark on a kill by Megan Hodges, but were unable to overcome the deficit dropping the final set 15-10. Eckerd scored the final four points of the set.

In the first set of the match, Rollins was made quick work of as the Tars dropped the opening frame 25-14. Rollins was held to a -.053 hitting percentage, while EC hit .321. The night before, the Tritons handed the No. 1 Tampa Spartans their first loss of the season in a five-set thriller.

Rollins won the second set 25-20 with Hodges pacing the Tars with five kills. The Tars improved their hitting percentage to a .209 and held the Tritons to a .171. In the third set, Rollins won 25-21 with Camille Indest leading the Tars with seven kills on 11 swings for a .455 attack percentage.

For the match, Hodges led the offense with 25 kills and 12 digs, while Indest added 15 kills and three blocks. Kelly Merideth added 13 kills and 11 digs. Phoebe Corder paced the defense with 20 digs. Kiana Parks tied her season-high 55 assists.

Eckerd stretches their win streak to 12 with the win and improve to 21-3 on the season and 10-2 in the SSC, while Rollins falls to 20-8 and 8-3 in conference play.

Defending SSC Offensive Player of the Week, Lindsay Biggs led the Tritons with 18 kills on 33 swings for a .485 attack percentage. Biggs also had 12 digs. Senior libero Hallie Ward paced the Eckerd defense with 26 digs.

Rollins will return to Warden Arena for a three-match home stint. The Tars will first face the Lynn Fighting Knights on Friday, Nov. 4 with first serve set for 7 p.m. Fans can catch all the action live on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com.
