WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (October 21, 2011) - The
Rollins Tars volleyball team defeated the Palm Beach Atlantic
Sailfish, 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-19), snapping the Sailfish's home
record at Rubin Arena Friday night at the Hyatt Place Sunshine
Classic.
Rollins now improves to 18-7 on the season, while Palm Beach
Atlantic drops to 18-3, snapping the Sailfish home record (8-1).
The Tars outhit PBA .319-.195 and outdid their opponent in all
statistical categories.
Kelly Merideth and Megan Hodges led the Tars with 13 and 12
kills, respectively. Camille Indest and Collyn Welsch each added
eight kills apiece. Junior Kiana Parks was credited with 37
assists and led with a match-high three service aces. Defensively,
Phoebe Corder tallied nine digs.
The Tars were hot out of the gate taking down the Sailfish 25-14
in the first set. Rollins hit .500 and held PBA to a .219 hitting
percentage.
In the second frame, Palm Beach Atlantic stepped up their game
and gave Rollins a run for their money. The Tars trailed in the
early going, 5-2, but made up some ground tying the score at 9-all
on a kill by Merideth. A Sailfish error gave Rollins a one-point
advantage and never looked back. The Tars won the second set
25-20.
Rollins turned things around in the final set scoring five
straight points from the get-go. The Tars remained in the lead
throughout the entire set, allowing PBA to come as close as one at
the 17-16 mark on a service ace by the Sailfish. Rollins pulled
through for the 25-19 win.
The Tars will be back in action Saturday afternoon when they the
Central Oklahoma (15-9) Bronchos. First serve is set for 12 Noon.
