Tars Tame Lions

CARROLLTON, Ga. (October 14, 2011) - Facing the North Alabama Lions for the second time this season, the Rollins Tars volleyball team captured a 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 19-25, 25-23) victory in the opening match of the Gulf South/SSC Crossover hosted by the University of West Georgia.

Holding North Alabama (15-4) to their lowest hitting percentage of the season, Rollins (14-7) outhit the Lions .164-.076. The Tars also posted the fourth best mark in program history with 14 total blocks.

Middle blocker Camille Indest recorded a career-high eight blocks against the Lions, to go along with nine kills and three digs. Defensively, the Tars collected 79 digs with lone senior Phoebe Corder leading the way with 21.

Collecting her ninth double-double of the season, Megan Hodges tallied a match-high 15 kills and 12 digs, along with four blocks. Also recording a double-double was Kelly Merideth with 13 kills and 13 digs, to go along with five blocks and four assists.

In game one, Rollins worked their way from a 7-2 deficit to a 13-all tie on a service ace by Merideth. A kill by Jessica Wilson gave the Tars a one-point advantage as Rollins held on for the 25-20 win. Rollins also collected six of their 14 blocks in the first set.

The Tars also took the second set by a score of 25-20, but led through the entire set. The Lions came as close as one on several occasions with the last coming at the 16-15 mark. The Tars were unable to make a clean sweep of North Alabama, dropping the third set 25-19. At the 17-all mark, UNA scored five straight points for a 22-17 lead. A kill by Collyn Welsch put the Tars within four, followed by a UNA hitting error that allowed Rollins within three, 22-19.

Game four saw eight ties and three lead changes with the final tie coming at the 15-all tie on a Rollins error. After it was all said and done, a kill by Merideth secured the 25-23 win for Rollins.
