THOMASVILLE, Ga.- (September 12, 2010)- The
Rollins College women's soccer team took advantage of early
opportunities to seal a 3-0 victory over the Thomas University
Night Hawks, earning their first shutout of the season. The Tars
advance to 3-1 on the season, while Thomas drops to an overall mark
of 2-3.
Rollins did its damage in the first half, scoring all three goals
within the first 17 minutes of action. Brenna
McKee, Meagan
Thomas and Ali
Schrader tallied the goals, while Ashley
Waplinger picked up two assists to aid the attack.
McKee ignited the scoring spree in the third minute with a nifty
chip shot over the head of the keeper to start the scoring for
Rollins. Rollins was on the attack again after scoring the first
goal and the relentless pressure led to Thomas
collecting her goal in the 12th minute, off a deflection
on the corner kick from Waplinger.
Rollins waited another five minutes before scoring the last tally
of the afternoon courtesy of Schrader, who ripped a shot over the
keepers head off a nice feed from Waplinger.
"We were very opportunistic early-on, scoring three goals on our
first five chances of the game," said head coach Patrick Baker.
"After that, we were just okay, we didn't look sharp. It was great
for Brenna to score her first collegiate goal, and Meagan continues
to be dangerous on set pieces. Ali's strike from far out was a
well-taken goal, and she has proven that it's something she can do
on a regular basis. With that being said, we collectively knew we
did not play to our full potential. We let a wonderful opportunity
slip through our fingers."
With sufficient numbers on the scoreboard, the Tars continued to
press the Night Hawks in all areas of the field, but were unable to
capitalize on opportunities in the box. Rollins cracked 18 shots
throughout the contest, while Thomas struggled with three, only
finding the frame on one, which was easily saved by Rollins
goalkeeper Michelle Dillingham.
Baker concluded, "I mentioned to the team that there were three
positives that came out of the game: we won, we earned our first
shutout, and everyone stayed healthy. We have showed improvement
from each game up until this point, but today we took a step back.
Our group has tremendous potential, and we need to work hard in
training this week as we prepare for our our home opener on
Thursday."
Rollins ends an almost two week long road trip, and returns home to
prepare for their first home game of the season on Thursday,
September 16. The Tars host Northwood University, with kickoff
slated for 7 p.m. at Barker Family Stadium and Cahall-Sandspur
Field.
