Savannah, Ga. (September 10, 2010) - In the
first match of the 2010 AASU/Chatham Orthopedics Pirate Volleyball
Classic, the Rollins Tars (4-1) took down host team Armstrong
Atlantic in a dramatic fashion winning 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 29-27)
this Friday afternoon.
After drawing two quick wins over AASU, the third set presented
a challenge for the Tars as the Pirates quickened their pace of
game. The third set saw 17 ties and six lead changes with most
taking place in the final moments of the game.
After AASU took their first lead of the match at 19-18, Jenny
Sherwood tied the score at 19-all on a kill. The Pirates would
give the Tars a scare after scoring two consecutive points to lead
21-19, but a serving error by AASU would turn the ball over to
Rollins. The score would bounce back and forth, but landed in the
Tars favor after Rollins took a one-point lead on another kill by
Sherwood. Securing the win for Rollins was freshman Megan
Hodges on a service ace.
"A region win is huge for our program. It builds the confidence
needed to be successful throughout the season," said head coach Sindee
Snow.
"The girls are working hard day-in and day-out to get the kinks
out for the start of conference. Our young players are stepping up
and becoming very effective and if we can take teams in three
(sets), it'll set the pace for a great season."
On top for the Tars was freshman Megan
Hodges with 11 kills for a .435 hitting percentage and 12 digs
for her second double-double of the season. Sarah
Mendoza tallied 14 kills for the Tars with two assists, five
digs, and a block assist. Freshman Camille
Indest finished 9-for-18 with two errors (.389), along with
three assists, one dig, and a season-high five blocks.
The win puts the Tars at 4-1 for the season, while the AASU
Pirates drop to 4-2 overall. The Tars close out day one of the
AASU Pirate Volleyball Classic with a 4:30 p.m. match-up with No.
