GAFFNEY, S.C. (May 1, 2010) - Three Tars
tallied hat tricks as the Rollins women's lacrosse team concluded
their regular season slate with a 19-12 loss to the fifth-ranked
Limestone College Saints on Saturday afternoon in Gaffney, S.C.
Rollins closes out their third season of play with a mark of
9-5, dropping contests to only nationally-ranked programs, and
ending their junior campaign with only two regional losses out of
10 in-region opponents. The Saints, who currently hold onto the
second seed in the South Region, advance to a record of 18-1 as
they look ahead to see if they will earn a bid to the post
season.
Leading the Tars with three goals apiece were Marissa
Giannerini, Erica
Pagliarulo, and Katy Tyszko. The hat trick
trio headed-up a group of six Tars in goals, and eight total
players to contribute points on the afternoon.
Sarah Ann
Showell, Liz Connelly, and Anna Townsend netted
a goal apiece, while Showell and Tori Snow earned two
assists. Connelly and Mallory Surpless rounded out
the scoring efforts with an assist each as the Tars overcame a 12-2
halftime deficit to outscore their opponent 10-7 in the second
half.
Renee Albro led all scorers with five goals on the day, while
Katie Ilott and Kelly Osterson both recorded hat tricks for the
Saints. Raquel Prager and Chelsea Treat each scored twice, while
four more Saints scored on the way to their eighteenth victory of
the season.
Snow had a game high six ground balls, leading the way as
Rollins won the ground ball battle 17-13, with help from Pagliarulo
who added collected four of her own.
The Tars hung on as Limestone had the advantage in draw controls
18-14, with a game best five from Snow, after giving up 10 to
Limestone in the first half. Rollins stymied the Saints with seven
caused turnovers on the day, including three from Pagliarulo and
two from Snow as the midfielders had a big day for the Tars.
Rollins fired first with a goal from Giannerini off of a Snow
feed a minute and a half into the contest to earn their only lead
of the game, but Limestone dominated the shots and draw controls in
the first half to gain the 10-goal lead at halftime, leaving
Rollins behind with a score of 12-2.
Despite the first half setback, Rollins came out strong in the
second period, outshooting the Saints 20-12 and winning 9 of the
total 17 second half draw controls. The Tars got the ball rolling
once again, with a quick goal from Showell 43 seconds in to open
the second period, but Albro countered with a goal of her own three
minutes later.
Both team traded blows once more, pulling the score to 14-4 with
22:11 to go in the game, but the Tars were not broken up by the two
traded goals. Tyszko found a pass from Surpless and placed the
ball between the pipes with 19:56 on the clock, igniting a five
goal run in a span of two and a half minutes that brought the Tars
back to within five goals of the Saints with a score of 14-9 and
17:18 to go in the game.
Ilott slowed the Tars' drive with free position goals at 16:22
and 12:26, while Prager found the back of the cage on a free
position shot of her own with 10:38 on the clock and a tally of
17-9 on the scoreboard. But Snow won the ensuing draw and ran it
down to the Tars' attacking end, sending a quick feed to Tyszko for
the Tars' tenth goal of the day just ten seconds later to pull the
Tars back to within seven.
The Tars and Saints closed out the game with two more goals
apiece to leave Rollins in a final seven point deficit.
The Saints held the 35-33 advantage on shots and 18-14 advantage
on draw controls. Rollins had 17 ground balls to Limestone's 13.
Limestone was 19-22 in clears while the Tars were 11-13.The Saints
were also 11-12 in free-position attempts.
