WINTER PARK, Fla. -
The Rollins baseball team used a three-run eighth inning to
ensure a 6-2 victory over the American International Yellow Jackets
in non-conference action, Sunday afternoon at Alfond Stadium.
The Tars (14-5) used their nine hits to scatter their six runs to
pick up their eighth consecutive victory, while the Yellow Jackets
(1-2) collected seven hits and committed one error.
First baseman Kevin
Mager led the Tar hitters with a 3-for-4 performance and an
RBI. The Middletown, N.J., native increased his batting average to
.301 on the season.
"We struggled early with our adjustments, but we came through the
clutch when we had runners in scoring position," assistant coach Mike
Reese said.
Right fielder Joey
Manning provided the game-high in RBIs with two as his two-run
RBI double down the left field line in the eighth was his lone hit
in the game.
Center fielder Taylor Ferguson was 2-for-4
with an RBI to increase his batting average to .424, a team-high
and now has 22 RBIs on the season. The Charlton, Mass., native
broke the scoreless tie in the fourth with a solo shot to right
center.
Left fielder Tony
Brunetti continued his hitting streak as he was 1-for-5 with an
RBI and two runs scored. Brunetti, a transfer from Winthrop, leads
the team in RBIs with 25 and has amassed a .354 average.
Senior hurler Tim Griffin (4-1) offered
another outstanding performance in an eight-inning effort to
capture his fourth win of the season. The Jacksonville, Fla.,
native allowed six hits and two runs, but struck out 13 Yellow
Jacket batters, raising his strike out figure to 32, tying teammate
Stephen Hiscock for a
team-high.
Reliever Brad
Renner came in and shutdown the ninth with only one blemish, a
base hit.
For AIC, catcher Anthony Arrichiello and Dan Mooney recorded solo
home runs to pace the Yellow Jacket offense. Center fielder Greg
Caruso was the team-high in hits with two.
Starter Matt Lee (0-1) was dealt the loss in his 7.2 innings of
work. Lee gave up nine hits and six runs, five earned in the
loss. Geogg McCowat stopped the bleeding in the eighth recording
the final out.
The Tars return to action for their opening game of the 62nd Annual
Rollins College Baseball Week, Monday, March 8 against Georgetown
at 7 p.m.
