FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (March 7, 2010) -
For the second straight season, the Rollins men's basketball
team will play for the BlueCross BlueShield of Florida Sunshine
State Conference Tournament title when the second seeded Tars tip
off with fourth seed Barry at 1 p.m. Sunday from the Arena at the
Don Taft University Center in Ft. Lauderdale.
Rollins earned a spot in the title game by getting past third seed
Eckerd 72-65 in the first semifinal game on Saturday. SSC
first-teamer Nick Wolf led the Tars with a game-high 27 points, 23
of which came in the second half while Myk Brown went 12-of-16 from
the charity stripe and added 16 points.
Barry thumped top-seed Florida Southern 79-59 on Saturday afternoon
to setup the title game. Tony Dennison poured in 22 points while
Zach Trapp added 21 for the Bucs.
In the all-time series, Rollins leads 36-14. In the 2009-10 season,
the teams split their two-game series with each winning on the
road. In Winter Park in January, the Bucs handed Rollins a 77-64
defeat in what would be the Tars' only two game losing streak of
the season. Later in the year in February, Rollins traveled to
Miami and erased a first have deficit to beat Barry 70-59.
The championship appearance is the Tars' eighth all-time with seven
coming under head coach Tom Klusman. Rollins' first crown cam in
the 1992 season with the Tars winning their semifinal game over
Tampa, 68-64 before downing Barry (six seed) in the finals,
74-64...Last time the Tars claimed the title was in 2006 as the top
seed. The Tars have attended the SSC tournament 30 times and have
amassed a 24-28 record during those years.
The Rollins women fell just short of making championship Sunday a
Rollins doubleheader for the second straight season as they fell to
third seed Barry 62-60 in overtime on Saturday in a semifinal
game.
Both men's and women's selections for the 2010 NCAA Division II
Tournament will released live on NCAA.com on Sunday, Mar. 7.
