WEST CHESTER, Pa. (March 28, 2010) - Rollins
outscored their opponent 10-6 in the second half to try to erase an
8-1 halftime deficit, but dropped 14-11 to the No. 5 West Chester
Golden Rams on Sunday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field in West
Chester, Pa.
Marissa Giannerini led the
Tars with four goals as Rollins (5-4) tried to hand West Chester
(7-0) their first loss of the season. But with a game-high five
goals from the Golden Rams' Jackie Hoover, West Chester stayed
perfect on the season.
The Tars saw scoring efforts from six different players, as Erica
Pagliarulo and Sarah Ann
Showell notched two apiece. Liz Connelly matched
Giannerini in points with a goal and three assists for four points
overall, with Katy Tyszko and Sophie Townsend
contributed one goal each on the afternoon.
Rollins led in shots 24-23, and held close with their opponent
in ground balls as they trailed 16-14. Both teams grabbed 13 draw
controls each, with Pagliarulo and Tori Snow earning four
apiece for the Tars. West Chester was led off the draw by Katy
Crouse, who collected a game-high six, including three key
possessions after each of the Tars' final three goals of the
contest.
Defensively, the Tars kept their opponent on their toes as they
caused 12 turnovers, with Connelly and Suzanne Gainey earning
three, and Sophie
Townsend leading the Tars with four ground balls.
West Chester pulled out to a 6-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of
action, but a Giannerini goal from Connelly snapped the Golden
Rams' scoring streak with 7:05 to go before the half. WCU notched
two more before the break to put the Tars in a seven goal deficit
at halftime, leaving Rollins with plenty of work for the final 30
minutes of play.
Giannerini ignited the Tars' comeback attempt as she scored the
first goal of the second half with 27:47 on the clock to put the
score at 8-2, kick starting a 10 goal second half as Rollins fought
to climb out of their first half slump.
In goal, Alyssa Emens totaled six
saves on the day, setting aside three shots in each half. Her
counterpart, MacKenzie O'Keefe, made eight total saves after facing
19 shots on goal from Rollins.
The Tars return to action on Friday, April 1, when they take on
Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C. Game time is set for 1:00
