BELMONT, N.C. (March 28, 2010) - Charlie
Shelly scored a game high three goals and tacked on an assist,
but it wasn't enough to lift Rollins over Belmont Abbey College as
the Tars fell 10-6 to the Crusaders on Sunday afternoon at Alumni
Field.
Rollins drops to 3-7 on the season, while Belmont Abbey advances
to an overall record of 3-4 in their first home contest of their
2010 campaign.
The Tars overcame a 4-2 halftime deficit and evened the score at
5-5 with 1:27 remaining in the third quarter, but were unable to
pull into the lead as BAC went on to outscore Rollins 5-1 in the
final 16 minutes of play.
Behind Shelly, the Tars saw one goal efforts from Eric Schmit, Drew
Berger, and Austin Ricci. Freshman Justin
Wright earned two assists, while Charles Cook and Schmit
added one assist apiece to the overall points on the afternoon.
The Crusaders were led by Tanner Scharr, Brian Watson, and
Charlie Kemp with two goals apiece. Seven different Crusaders
notched goals, and five tallied assists as BAC handed Rollins their
third-straight loss.
Rollins saw stellar work from a core group of defensive players,
as Andrew Vossler and Zach Cole
notched a game high six ground balls apiece, and Nick Scannapieco and
Chris Gorman earned five
each.
The Tars earned a stifling 13 caused turnovers, with Vossler
racking up a game best of three, including two off of
interceptions. Cole collected seven saves on the day as he faced
31 shots and 17 shots on goal.
Rollins' man down unit held the Crusaders silent on 5-of-6 extra
man opportunities, allowing only one man-up goal all game, which
came in the first quarter. The Tars won 11-of-19 faceoffs thanks
in large part to Schmit who was 8-for-12 on the day.
Belmont Abbey held the Tars silent in the first quarter, and
opened up the game with a four goal lead. Shelly finally got the
ball rolling for Rollins in the second period, as he grabbed a feed
from Wright to put the Tars up on the scoreboard, and then cut the
Crusaders' lead in half as he fired another ball between the pipes
with 7:02 to go before the break.
After outscoring their opponent 2-0 in second period play,
Rollins looked to come out big in the second half. But BAC scored
first with a goal from Scharr to open up their lead to three with
11:21 to go in the quarter.
Rollins netted three quick goals, including a goal and assist
from Shelly, to knot the score at 5-5 with 1:27 before the final
quarter, but Scharr ripped an unassisted shot past Cole with 35
seconds on the clock to put the Crusaders up by one entering into
the final 15 minutes. Belmont Abbey went on to out-score the Tars
4-1 in the fourth quarter to seal the deal, and close out the day
with their initial lead.
The Tars return to action in their final game of the regular
season when they travel to Saint Leo University on Tuesday, April
6. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Fans who cannot make it to the
game will be able to catch all of the action live on the Tars
