TAMPA, Fla. (February 6, 2010) -
Dominate from top to bottom, the 11th-ranked Rollins women's
tennis team began its 2010 season with a 9-0 win over Tampa,
Saturday.
Rollins (1-0, 1-0 Sunshine State Conference) jumped out to a 3-0
lead with solid play in doubles. Margaret Junker and Kayli
Ragsdale defeated Kourtney Stark and Megan Mancini 8-1 in the
No. 1 position while Roshni Luthra and Lisa Loft took care
of Molly Welsh and Nikol Williams 8-3 in the No. 2 position. Holly
Fleming and Stefania Tkach made it a
clean sweep for Rollins with an 8-0 win over Briana Ryan and Becky
Ewing at No. 3.
The Tars were just as strong in singles play with just the top
flight match going into three sets. In No. 1 singles, 21st-ranked
Luthra defeated Stark 6-2 in the first set, only to have Stark come
back and take the second set 6-3. Luthra then prevailed with a 9-7
win in the deciding frame.
Fleming was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Welsh at No. 2 with Clarke Tatje downing
Ewing by the same score at No. 6.
Rollins won each of the No. 3-through-No. 5 matches by shutout.
Tkach over Williams at No. 3, Junker over Mancini at No. 4 and
Ragsdale against Ryan at No. 5 were all taken by Rollins 6-0,
6-0.
Rollins will host Saint Leo in their home opener on Thursday, Feb.
3 with play slated to begin at 3:30.
