WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 28, 2010)- The
Rollins softball team used hot bats to secure a double header sweep
of Kentucky St., Sunday morning, 27-1 and 10-0. With the pair of
victories the Tars improve to 6-0 overall and Kentucky St. falls to
0-4 on the season. Rollins looks to gain momentum heading into
their first road trip of the season when they travel to Carrollton,
Ga. to participate in the West Georgia Invitational this
weekend.
In game one, the Tars were led by junior Christine Roser, who
was a perfect 4-for-4 with 11 RBIs after two grand slams in the
game. Roser propelled the Tars to scoring 10 runs in the first
inning and helped tack on eight more runs in the second inning to
run the lead to 18-0. The first inning saw Roser come to the plate
twice, once collecting an RBI double and then the grand slam.
The Tars would tack on another five runs in the third and rounded
out the scoring with four in the fourth to push the lead to 27-1.
The 27 runs sets a new program record for the Tars.
Also collecting multi-RBI games were Amber Pederson, Krista Rodden and Lauren
Caldwell as each tallied two RBIs. Jessica
Moreland, Kirsten
Frame, Meredith
Foster and Vanesa Volkema added one RBI apiece.
Just as the bats were hot the pitching was up to the task and Frame
and Poarch combined to go five strong innings allowing six hits and
one run. Frame picks up the victory to improve to 4-0 and lowers
her ERA to 0.84.
Game two saw the Tars bat's come alive again as they posted a 10-0
victory in game two. Rodden led the way for the Tars attack, going
2-for-2 with five RBIs as she collected a grand slam in the fourth
inning to give the Tars the eight run cushion to end the game in
five innings. Joining Rodden with RBIs was freshmen Kelly Jones, Moreland
and Lauren
Caldwell. Rollins scored in the one in the first, five in the
third and four in the fourth to finish off Kentucky St. and to earn
the series sweep.
Roser took to the circle and produced a strong outing going five
innings, allowing three hits and no runs, while striking out eight
batters. With the win Roser picks up her first career victory for
the Tars.
Rollins will face Columbus St. when they start the West Georgia
Invitational March 5 at 12 p.m.
