WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 13, 2010) - Eight
Tars scored en route to a 22-4 romp over St. Andrews Presbyterian
College in the 2010 Rollins women's lacrosse season opener on
Saturday afternoon at Showalter Field.
Junior attacker Liz Connelly led the game in
points with a hat trick and four assists, for a total of seven
points on the day. The Tars' win over the Knights was the
third-straight season, and kicks off their 2010 campaign with a
record of 1-0.
The Knights (0-1), drop their third straight contest to Rollins
in as many seasons, and succumb to the largest deficit in the
series' short history after falling to the Tars by 18 points.
Rollins saw four-goal scoring efforts from sophomore midfielder
Tori Snow, as well as
newcomers Sarah Ann
Showell and Erica
Pagliarulo. Connelly, and Marissa Giannerini notched a
hat trick apiece, while Mallory Suprless fired two of her own
between the pipes. Both Lacy Goodwyn and Sophie Townsend
rallied to find one goal each to round out the goal scoring.
Dishing out assists as always was junior Katy Tyszko, who led
the game with five, while Connelly's four, and Surpless' two, along
with one more from Showell, helped the Tars on the way to a 22
goal, 12 assist final tally. Rollins scored 12 of their points in
the first half, and rode the second half all the way to an easy
victory.
SAPC was led by Megan Jolly with two goals, while Victoria
Bickett and Carrie Jones each notched one.
The Tars stifled the Knights in all areas, out-shooting their
opponent 44-6, grabbing more ground balls 55-23, winning 22 of 28
draw controls, and finding success on 15-of-16 clears in comparison
to St. Andrews' 11-of-18. The Tars committed only 14 turnovers all
contest, and caused 12 of the Knights' 22 total turnovers.
Defensively, St. Andrews was led by goalie Morgan Achilles, who
racked up 13 saves and seven ground balls on the afternoon.
Rollins jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, thanks to an opening
goal from Giannerini off of a free position opportunity just
seconds into the contest to give the Tars the early advantage.
Bickett put the Knights on the scoreboard on a free position shot
with 19:18 before the half, but Pagliarulo answered right back with
a good free position attempt of her own to put the score at 6-1
with 12:22 remaining before the break.
Jolly notched the next score on an unassisted goal with 9:31 in
the half to put the score at 7-2, but the Tars kicked their game
into high gear in the final nine minutes, outscoring their opponent
5-0 to close out the half much like they opened it. Rollins went
on to outscore St. Andrews 10-2 in the second half, and walked away
from their first contest of the season on a high note.
The Tars will be back in action on Friday, February 19, when
they host 2009 National Champion, and 2010 preseason favorite
Adelphi University. The game is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m., and
will be held at Winter Springs High School. Fans will be able to
catch all of the action live on the Tars Sports Network at
