MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (February 10, 2010) - Nick
Wolf recorded his third straight double-double and led the
23rd-ranked Rollins men's basketball team to a 70-59 road win at
Barry in a key Sunshine State Conference match-up Wednesday.
The victory keeps Rollins atop the league standings with records
of 18-4, 9-2 SSC while dropping Barry to 14-8, 5-6.
Wolf led all scorers with 23 points and 13 rebounds, shooting
8-of-15 from the field and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. Matt
Robertson added 11 points as every player on the roster
recorded at least two points. Miami native and senior Ryan
Ferranti was a huge spark off the bench for the Tars, tallying
four points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Tony Dennison led Barry with 17 points and seven rebounds. Zack
Trapp and Willie Whitfield each added 10 points with Whitfield
grabbing seven rebounds.
Rollins hit eight 3-pointers and shot 49 percent (25-of-51) from
the field while holding the Buccaneers to just one 3-pointer and 38
percent (22-58) shooting. Despite Wolf's big night on the boards,
Rollins was outrebounded by the Bucs 35-31.
The Tars scored the first five points of the game before a 6-0
run by Barry put the hosts on top by one early. After trading the
lead one more time, Barry began to roll and built seven point
advantages on two different occasions midway through the half.
An Alex
Castillo tip-in, Ian Scott jumper and
Ferranti stickback got Rollins to within one, 23-22 with 4:19
remaining. In the final minute of the period with Rollins down
three, Wolf drove and was blocked by Jeran Morris, but stayed with
the play and scored a reverse layup to make the score 30-29 at the
half.
Both teams came out cold in the second half until a Julian
Wilkison jumper more than a minute in put the Tars up by one.
Dennison was good on a pair of free throws to give the Bucs the
lead, but Robertson drained a trey on the Tars next possession,
putting them ahead for good.
The Tars defense then took over as Rollins slowly began to pull
away and pushed the advantage to double-digits at the 9:36 mark,
behind a Nikola Baran 3-pointer. A
Wolf, step-back 3-pointer with less than eight minutes to play gave
Rollins a 59-44 lead and Barry would get no closer than nine the
rest of the way.
Rollins will be back at home Saturday, Feb. 13 at 4 p.m. hosting
Tampa. Fans can follow all the action live on the Tars Sports
Network at RollinsSports.com and locally on 91.5 FM, WPRK.
