At A Glance - Undefeated Rollins welcomes
undefeated Virginia State University to Warden Arena on Monday in a
match-up featuring two high-powered offenses. The Tars (9-0) are
averaging 79.4 points a game and are coming off a 103-50 thumping
of Warner University on Saturday. Four players scored in
double-figures, led by 15 from Amber Heistan. Rollins' defense has
been just as impressive, holding opponents to just 48.6 points and
31 percent shooting a night. In their current five-game home stand,
the Tars have outscored visitors by an average of 40.2 points a
game...Virginia State (6-0), out of the Central Intercollegiate
Athletic Association, is netting 80.5 points a night and heads to
Winter Park after a 108-41 win over Washington Adventists on Dec.
4. Rhon'Neisha Taylor and Marquilla Evans each poured in 20 points
to lead the Lady Trojans. On the season, VSU is outscoring
opponents by 33.7 points a game and has twice eclipsed the century
mark.
The Series - Tuesday is the first meeting
between Rollins College and Virginia State University in women's
basketball.
The Stars - Junior wing Kristina Mingos is
averaging 11.9 points a game to pace the Tars offense. Amber
Heistan chips in 10.8 points a game while Sarah Blackburn adds 10.6
points and a team best 6.4 rebounds a game. Seven Tars average five
or more points a game...Rhon'Neisha Taylor leads the Lady Trojans
with 15.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Marquilla Evans adds
10.4 points a night and Janelle McDowell nets 9.8.
The Coaches - Rollins legend Glenn Wilkes, Jr.
(Stetson '81) is in his 25th season at the helm of the Tars
program, and with a record of 541-175 is the winningest coach in
the history of the program. In 2007 he was honored as the SSC's top
coach of the conference's first 25 years. A year prior, he led the
Tars to an undefeated season and was named NCAA Division II
National Coach of the Year... James Hill (Shaw University) is in
his fifth season leading the Lady Trojans and has a career record
of 76-53 at VSU
The Rankings - Rollins is tied for
19th in the latest WBCA/USA TODAY Division II Coaches
poll and was picked third in the Sunshine State Conference
preseason poll...VSU received 11 votes in the rankings.
