BOCA RATON, Fla.
Catcher Ben Hewett captured three hits and a walk to
score the Tars' lone run in a 10-1 loss against the Lynn University
Fighting Knights, Thursday afternoon at McCusker Sportsplex.
Hewett, a native of Framingham, Mass., registered his second
three-hit performance of the season with a trio of singles,
Thursday. Hewett moves into a tie for fourth place on the team
with Ryan Luker for batting averages as they are
hitting .366 each. Luker, Rollins (22-15, 5-8) other hitter to
record multiple hits, finished 2-for-4.
Starter Tim Griffin (5-2) was dealt the loss after going
six innings. Griffin suffered a pair of homeruns in the first
inning, but settled down to allow just one hit and one run over the
next five innings.
Relief pitcher Chad Giannuzzi pitched an inning and allowed four
runs from four hits, before freshman Andrew
Loynaz tossed the final frame and gave up two unearned
runs.
Lynn's ace Dan Wright (9-2) picked up the win in a seven-inning
effort, limiting the Tars to just five hits and one run. He
finished with 10 strikeouts.
After a leadoff home run by Douglas Toro, the Knights held a 1-0
lead before a two-run shot from Gabe McDougall gave Lynn a 3-0
advantage in the first.
The teams were held scoreless in the next three innings as both
pitchers got into their rhythm. However, in the top of the fifth,
Hewett got Rollins on the board when he stole third and scored on
an error by the Knight's catcher, Kyle Holloway. With a runner on
second and one out, the Tars grounded out and struck to finish the
frame.
An inning and a half later, the Knights sealed the win with four
runs in the seven. McDougall's three-RB I double laced down the
left field line highlighted the inning, before a Chris Chavez
single up the middle capped the scoring in the seventh.
In the Eighth, the Knights capitalized on a couple of Tars' errors
to add two more runs.
The three-game series resumes, Friday, April 10, at noon.
