LAURINBURG, N.C. (April 5, 2009) - Junior
midfielder Marissa
Giannerini led the Tars with five goals and two assists to help
Rollins to a big 16-14 victory over the St. Andrews Presbyterian
College Knights on Sunday afternoon. Rollins upsets the Knights on
their senior day and advances to 9-2 on the season, while the
Knights drop to an overall mark of 9-6.
Along with Giannerini's game high seven points, the
sharpshooting trio of Liz
Connelly, Katy Tzysko, and Tori
Snow tallied three points apiece as Connelly netted three
goals, and Tyszko and Snow found success on two goals and an assist
each. Freshman Bizzie
Durell tallied two goals of her own, while Mallory
Surpless and Lacy
Goodwyn had one apiece, with freshman Gabi
Lombardi registering her first assist of her collegiate
career.
St. Andrews saw scoring efforts from seven players as Kerrie
Brown, Kelsey Binggeli, Katie Wright, Alexis Goldman, Kim McDaniel,
Cara Manas, and Courtney Ross all contributed to the final score
for the Knights.
In a close game that included an 8-8 tie at the half and a 10-10
deadlock midway through the second half, Rollins finally pulled
away with five consecutive goals in an eight-minute outburst to
pull ahead 15-10 and hold onto the lead for their fifth straight
win. SAPC scored four of the last five goals to cut the deficit to
two goals but smart play from the Tars in the final minutes allowed
Rollins to hold onto the ball in key situations and keep the
Knights from a late second half sprint.
The Tars scored the first three goals of the game in the first
two minutes and held on to a small advantage throughout the first
half until the Knights scored the final two goals of the period
within a 40 second span on a woman-up opportunity to equalize the
score for the first time of the game.
Rollins jumped out to a two goal lead after the half, but SAPC
sophomore Alexis Goldman netted back-to-back goals to tie the
contest for the second time at 10-10 with 18:09 remaining in
regulation. Connelly fired the go-ahead goal between the pipes off
of a Snow assist with 14:31 to go, and ignited a five-goal run that
helped the Tars burn through the remainder of the half holding onto
the lead.
Giannerini's fifth goal of the day with less than four minutes
remaining looked to give Rollins a run-away victory as the Tars'
lead grew to 16-11 but St. Andrews never kept fighting as they went
on a late three-goal run with Goldman pulling the Knights to within
two with 31.4 seconds showing on the clock after grabbing a ground
ball off a rebounded shot and quickly placing the ball in cage.
Snow won the ensuing draw control off the goal, and the Tars
were able to hold onto ball for the final 30 seconds to pick up the
impressive victory and keep their series streak alive with
two-straight wins against the Knights.
The Tars will return to action on Friday, April 17, when they
travel to Sparkill, N.Y. to take on St. Thomas Aquinas College in a
4:00 p.m. matchup. Fans of Rollins women's lacrosse can stay up to
