WINTAGE, N.C. (April 5, 2009) Sophomore sharpshooter BJ
Neller netted a hat trick as the Tars took on Wingate
University in a Deep South Conference matchup on Sunday afternoon.
In spite of the Tars' best efforts, Wingate took the win with a
final score of 19-4, dropping Rollins to an overall mark of 2-7,
0-4 in DSC play, while the Bulldogs advance to 7-7, 2-2 in
conference action.
Freshman Cooper
Gilman joined Neller on the scoreboard with the first goal of
the contest, while Clay
Palmer registered two assists and Ian
Tarrant tallied an assist of his own to help the Rollins
offense. Facing off for the Tars was freshman midfielder Chuck
Magid, winning 13-of-27 on the afternoon. Defensively, Andrew
Vossler led both teams with nine ground balls, while goalies Zach
Cole and Doug
O'Brien made 10 and two saves, respectively.
Wingate was led by attackman Greg Williams with four goals, and
saw scoring action from Ryan Otterblad, Angus Derbyshire, Mike
Bayliss, Billy Mutton, David Lee, and Travis Barrett as they scored
two apiece. Midfielder Mark Hodsdon scored a goal of his own and
added three assists, while five more Bulldogs contributed assists
on the afternoon.
Rollins jumped into the first quarter with Gilman's goal at
10:49 off of Tarrant's assist to put the Tars up 1-0. But with a
tally from Barrett to grab the equalizer at the 8:44 mark the
Bulldogs ignited their first quarter scoring streak as they scored
five unanswered goals to close out the first quarter with a score
of 5-1.
Bayliss kicked-off the second quarter to help Wingate extend
their lead, and with a goal from Williams with 5:19 to go before
the halftime break the Tars dropped to a 7-1 deficit.
Neller finally ignited the Tars as he worked his way around
three defenders to fire a shot between the pipes with 4:11 on the
clock, and with 2:37 to go Neller netted another goal from a Gilman
assist to bring the Tars back to within four with a score of
7-3.
37 seconds later, Neller once again grabbed an assist from
Palmer to fire a shot past Wingate's Danny Dlugozima to bring the
score to 7-4 with two minutes to go in the second quarter. As the
clock counted down to 13 seconds before the half, Wingate's David
Lee snuck a goal past Cole to put the Bulldogs up by four with a
halftime score of 8-4.
The Bulldogs entered into the second half with Williams netting
their ninth goal off of an interception around the crease and
didn't look back as they went on to score ten more points to close
out the half, silencing the Tars they were unable to put any more
points on the scoreboard in the final 30 minutes of action.
