WINTER PARK, Fla The Rollins College
baseball team scored 15 runs in the first three innings to cruise
to a 22-8 win over the American International Yellow Jackets,
Sunday afternoon at Alfond Stadium.
The Tars (12-6) had nine batters record multiple hits with
seniors Jesse
More and Bryan
Bennett notching three hits apiece. A native of Maitland,
Fla., More tallied two doubles to tie a game-high with four RBIs,
while registering two runs scored.
Bennett was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, an RBI, double and a
walk to increase his season batting average to .394 and continues
to lead the team with nine doubles.
Infielder Ryan
Luker was 2-for-4, which included a triple and a home run, as
he finished the game with four RBIs, four runs scored and a pair of
doubles. Luker leads the team with 26 RBIs, seven more ahead of
second place, Taylor
Ferguson.
Catcher Ben
Hewett was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored to
remain his batting average above .400 at .435. Ferguson leads the
team in the category hitting .441 and also went 2-for-3 with two
runs scored, Sunday.
Rollins hit nine doubles, while the Yellow Jackets (1-3) were
held to zero and also out-hit AIC 23-15.
Starter Danny
Clark (2-2) evened his record after going six innings allowing
seven hits, one run and a walk. Chad
Giannuzzi, Bobby
Coster and Alex
Venegas shared time in the remaining three innings.
Sean Stevenson (0-1) was dealt the loss as he pitched two
innings surrendering 12 hits and 13 runs, 10 earned. Dennis Duffy
came in and tossed the next five innings, giving up four runs on
five hits, before Brad Brothers closed pitched the eighth allowing
five runs.
After jumping out to a 15-0 after three innings, Rollins added a
run in the fourth and seventh, which sandwiched an AIC score in the
top of the fifth.
Trailing 17-2 the Yellow Jackets mounted a mini-comeback scoring
six runs in the eighth to cut the deficit to 17-9. The Tars
responded with five more runs in the bottom half of the inning to
seal the win.
In the eighth, back-to-back-to-back triples from Luker, More and
Avanzino highlighted the frame that saw five base hits.
The last time the Tars scored 22 runs was a 22-0 victory over
conference foe, Eckerd, May 3, 2008.
Rollins returns to the diamond, March 9 at 6 p.m. against
Georgetown for the start of the 61st Annual Baseball Week.
