WINTER PARK, Fla.
A six-run first inning propelled the Maine Black Bears to an
11-2 victory over the Rollins College baseball team, Friday evening
at Alfond Stadium.
The Tars (14-9) were held to just seven hits in the contest as
catcher Ben Hewett and Taylor
Ferguson recorded two apiece to lead the team. Hewett
registered an RBI, his 15th of the season, along with Bryan
Bennett.
Rollins starter Stephen Hiscock (4-2) pitched 4.2 innings
allowing 12 hits, eight runs and three walks, despite striking out
six in the loss. Robbie Pagano pitched 1.1 relief innings
surrendering a solo home run and a walk. Senior Mark
Jigarjian pitched the final two innings for the Tars giving up
three hits and two runs.
For the Black Bears (9-6), Jarett Lukas was 3-for-5 with two RBIs
and two runs scored along with center fielder Billy Cather who was
3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Both tallied home runs in
the contest for Maine.
The Black Bears finished with 17 total hits with five batters
recording multi-hit efforts.
On the mound for Maine, Keith Bilodeau (1-2) picked up his first
victory of the season going seven innings, allowing five hits and
one run. Matt Klaczkiewicz and Justin Latta pitched the final two
innings to secure the victory.
After allowing six runs in the first inning, the Tars threatened to
score in the second. Left fielder Jesse
More led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on
the Ben Hewett following at-bat, a ground ball to
first that when between the legs of the Maine's first baseman.
With runners on the corners and no outs, Bilodeau struck out John
Avanzino and forced second baseman Josh
Band to hit into a double play to end the threat.
Again in the fourth, Rollins placed runners on the corner with one
out, but another double play by the Black Bears finished the
frame.
The Tars scored its first run in the fifth, Bennett's two-out RBI
single up the middle to score Michael
Garczynski, who singled to center previously.
Rollins tacked on its final run in the eighth when Hewett
blasted a double to right center. The shot from Hewett scored
pinch hitter Ryan Maddern.
Rollins returns to action, Saturday, March 14, at 11 a.m. against
the Penn Quakers.
