WINTER PARK, Fla. Senior outfielder Jesse
More scored the game-winning run on a passed ball to culminate
the Tars' 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Maine Black Bears,
Tuesday evening at Alfond Stadium during 2009 Baseball Week
action.
Tied 3-3 in the ninth, More led off the frame when he was hit by
a pitch. On a failed hit and run attempt, More stole second before
the throw down from Maine's catcher, Myckie Lugbauer.
Designated hitter Eugene
Martinez hit a blooper to left to advance More to third, but
after being held up at third, More couldn't score despite an error
by the left fielder, which allowed Martinez to reach second.
First baseman Stephen
Hiscock was intentionally walked to load the bases during the
next at bat. Pinch hitter Scott
Chase stepped in, but wouldn't get an opportunity to drive in
the run, as reliever AJ Bazdanes' (0-2) pitch got underneath
Lugbauer and rolled to the back stop allowing for More to secure
the Tars' fifth-straight victory.
Second baseman Ryan
Luker led the Tars with a 2-for-3 performance and a game-best
two RBIs to lead the Tars' offense. Centerfielder Taylor
Ferguson and Hiscock both added a pair of base hits.
Junior starter Marc
Hewett earned the no decision going six innings allowing three
runs off six hits. Senior Marty
Cornish pitched 2.2 innings and gave up three hits and struck
out three during his effective appearance. Robbie
Pagano (1-0) was credited the win after closing out the
ninth.
For the Black Bears, AJ Bazdanes went eight innings and gave up
three runs on seven hits, despite the no decision. Reliever Keith
Bilodeau suffered the loss allowing the lone run in the ninth to
score.
Maine jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. With
two outs, right fielder Kevin McAvoy drew a four pitch walk and
advanced to third on the ensuing single by Jarett Lukas through the
right side. Shortstop Tony Patane followed with an RBI-single.
The Black Bears continued the two-out rally with a George Tager
RBI, which preceded a Hewett wild pitch to cap the scoring.
Rollins answered in the bottom of the third when Hiscock started
the frame with a single to center. Third baseman Michael
Garczynski was hit-by-a-pitch to place runners on first and
second with no outs. Shortstop Justin
Yount advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt, which allowed
Taylor
Ferguson to record the infield RBI single, scoring Hiscock.
Luker reached base on a fielder's choice and Bryan
Bennett flied out to end the scoring threat.
Trailing 3-1, the Tars relied on its defense to remain close,
which included fielding two double plays.. In the eighth, the Tars
evened the score on a Luker two-out two-run RBI single, scoring
Ferguson, who reached on a double and Bennett, who was hit by a
pitch.
The Black Bears led off the ninth with a Justin Leiseheimer
single and he advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, but after a
pop up and line out, Maine couldn't get Leisenheimer to score.
The Rollins baseball team sported pink uniforms and hats in the
contest in their support of the American Cancer Society-Search for
a Cure for Breast Cancer. All proceeds from the game, including
gate receipts, concession and apparel sales went to the cause.
Rollins, now 2-0 during Baseball Week, returns to the diamond
against Penn, Wednesday at Noon.
