San Antonio, Texas (February 5, 2009)
The Rollins softball team started its 2009 season with two games
today, going 1-1 on the first day of competition at the St. Mary's
Division II Invitational. In the first game of the
doubleheader, the Tars cruised past Eastern New Mexico, 7-1 before
falling to Abilene Christian, 4-3 in the nightcap.
The Tars used the hot bats of Rachael
Foster and Christine
Roser to put away Eastern New Mexico as they combined to
hit .833. The also game saw Monica
Meadows and Rachael
Foster each collect two RBIs to help guide the Tars to a
victory.
Eastern New Mexico struck first on the scoreboard as that proved
to be the only run of the game for them. A pass ball by the Tars
allowed Lauren Thompson to come in from third as she reached base
on a single. The first inning was the only blemish on the
scoreboard for the Tars as Nicole Anderson would shut down Eastern
New Mexico for the rest of the game.
The Tars offense started in the third inning as Rachel
Almengual started things off with a double to right center
field. Almengual would then move to second on an illegal pitch by
Kristen Cruickshank. Monica
Meadows then stepped up and laced a double to right center to
bring Almengual home. After that the Tars tacked on two more runs
in the inning. Three runs was plenty of cushion for senior pitcher
Nicole
Anderson to record the victory.
It wouldn't be until the sixth inning that the Tars struck again
on the scoreboard again as the Tars tacked on another four runs. Nicole
Anderson ended the game allowing three hits, collecting seven
strikeouts, and allowing one earned run.
The second game of the day started out promising for the Tars as
they struck first on the scoreboard by tallying three runs in the
first inning. Rachael
Foster started the inning with a single to center field. The
inning also would see Missy
Thogmartin hit an RBI double to center field. This would set
the table for Jamie
Rausch, who sent a drive over the left field fence to score
Thogmartin from second.
The Tars would hold the lead until the fifth inning as Abilene
Christian pushed across three runs. The sixth inning would see the
Wildcats take the lead on a Shelby McElvain homer to center field.
The Tars tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh
inning, but they were unable to get the tying run home from
third.
