WINTER PARK, Fla. (December 30, 2009) - Rollins
had four player score in double figures and cruised past Maryville
University 69-39 in a non-conference, Wednesday matinee.
Brooke Burgess poured in a season best 21 points and pulled down
eight rebounds to lead the Tars (7-3). Brittainy Daiger chipped in
12 points with Jasmine Bradley netting 10. Amber Heistan added 11
points and a career best seven assists.
Tori Tyner tallied 10 points and seven rebounds to lead the Lady
Saints (2-7) while Ellyn Unger chipped in seven points off the
bench.
Rollins broke a 4-4 tie after the first three minutes with a
10-2 run to take a 14-6 lead at the 14:21 mark of the half. The
Saints responded with a quick 6-0 spurt over the next two minutes
to cut the Tars lead to three before consecutive buckets by Burgess
and Bradley put Rollins back up seven. Maryville again closed the
gap to three, but the Tars outscored the visitors 13-5 in the final
five minutes of the half to take a 38-22 lead at intermission.
Rollins defense shined in the second half and surrendered just
five field goals to the Saints in the frame. The Tars lead
ballooned to 23 early in the second half, but was cut to 18 after
five straight points from Unger. After five consecutive trips down
the floor for the Tars came up empty, Bradley drained a jumper to
put Rollins back up 20, 54-34 with five minutes to play.
Abrielle Clemons then put the exclamation point on the game with
a layup in the final seconds to give the Tars the convincing
victory.
Rollins shot 39 percent (27-69) in the game and held Maryville
to just 25 percent (13-52) from the field. The Tars also won on the
boards 43-37 and forced 23 MU turnovers while committing just
11.
The Tars will be back in action on Saturday, January 2 at No. 15
Clayton State. Rollins will look to avenge an earlier loss to the
Lakers as Clayton downed Rollins 75-53 in the Tars Thanksgiving
Classic. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
