WINTER PARK, Fla. (January 24, 2009)
Senior forward Ines
Teuma scored a career high 19 points and went on to tally her
third double-double of the season with 10 boards as Rollins downed
Barry 58-41 on Saturday afternoon in Warden Arena.
The twelfth ranked Tars advance to 16-1, 6-1 in conference
action, while the Bucs, currently ranked 23 in the USA Today/ESPN
Coaches Poll, drop to 13-5 and 4-3 in the Sunshine State
Conference.
Teuma led all scorers on the day, going 6-11 in field goals and
7-8 from the charity stripe to help the Tars overcome a first half
deficit and continue on to a 17 point advantage. Joining Teuma in
double figures was freshman guard Kourtnie
Berry with 10 points on the afternoon. The Apopka, Fla. native
went 3-6 on the day, shooting 50 percent (2-4) from long range and
completing a perfect 2-2 from the line.
Barry's Kristy Singletary walked away with 14 points to lead the
Bucs, with Kia Palmer and Princess Bailey tallying eight and seven,
respectively.
Rollins shot 35 percent (20-58) for the game, but held Barry to
just 24 percent (13-54) on the day. The Tars found a little more
luck from the free throw line, completing 15-18 for 83 percent,
while Barry remained at 58 percent on the day (11-19).
The Tars were able to get up on the board first with a quick
jumper from sophomore guard Jessica
Pressley, but the Bucs would tie-up the score at two a few
minutes later. It was back and forth for the next few minutes,
with neither team going up by more than three until a layup by
Palmer with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first period
pulled the Bucs ahead by five.
The five point difference would prove to be the largest lead for
the Bucs. With a pair of free throws from Pressley (4-4 from the
line), the Tars quickly cut the lead down to three. Senior Erin
Kirkwood sank two from the stripe a minute later to bring the
Tars to within one with 8:18 left in the half, but Bailey made good
on a free throw of her own to pull Barry ahead by two.
Rollins found the equalizer just seconds later as Teuma
connected on a jumper in the paint to tied up the score for the
fifth time all game with a score of 16-16.
Both teams were unable to sink a shot for the following three
minutes, but freshman Paris
Moore helped to spark the Tars' momentum with just under four
minutes remaining as she stole the ball and took a fast break down
court to make good on a layup.
Rollins held onto their drive for the remaining minutes in the
first half and pulled out to a seven point lead to enter into the
halftime break with a score of 26-19.
The Tars held onto their first half energy and entered into the
second half to shoot 40 percent from the field and 42 percent from
long range thanks to two treys from Berry, and one more from fellow
freshman Jasmine
Bradley. Rollins ran their lead to 19 in second half action
with 1:13 remaining in the contest, and with a jumper by Palmer
with 20 seconds to go Barry closed the differential to 17 points to
end the game.
The Rollins women's basketball team will be back in action on
Wednesday, January 28 as they remain at home to host fellow
Sunshine State conference opponent Eckerd College at 5:30 p.m. in
the first part of a SSC double-header in the Alfond Sports Center.
