WINTER PARK, Fla. (September 5, 2008)
With less than five minutes left in a tie game, Carlos
Lozano rocketed through two defenders and fired a shot past the
Montevallo keeper to give Rollins a hard fought 4-3 victory on
Friday night. The win moves the Tars to 2-1 on the season and gives
them a huge, early season South Region win.
A very spirited game from the start, each team was whistled for
18 fouls and five cards were issued.
The Tars started the scoring in the 16th minute as Jacob
Deloach laid a textbook corner kick into the Rollins box, where
Thomas
Biddinger slammed a header into the net. The host Tars went up
2-0 in the 32nd minute as connecting passes from Simon
Jensen and Blade
Zych gave Nick
Sowers space for a try that went past the diving keeper.
Montevallo (0-3) quickly answered in the 33rd minute with a goal
from Daniel Pelletier. The Falcons then found the equalizer in the
41st minute from the foot of Joe Gross and finally the go ahead
score from James Steer in the 43rd minute.
The teams played to a stalemate coming out of the break with
both squandering scoring chances late. In the 70th minute, Rollins
mounted an attack and Montevallo was called for a foul 40 yards
out. Again Deloach placed a perfect free kick into the box that was
headed by Biddinger. This time it bounced off a few defenders, but
Zych was there to clean it up and knot the game at 3-3.
After a brief delay due to the sprinklers coming on at
Cahall-Sandspur field, head coach Keith
Buckley inserted Lozano for the final push. With just under
five minutes to go in regulation, the sophomore took a flick from
Justin
Clark and raced through the defense, setting up for a rocket to
the back of the net, putting Rollins up 4-3. The Tars were then
able to kill the clock the rest of the way to pick up the key
win.
Aaron
Rokeach was the winning keeper for Rollins, picking up four
saves and allowing three goals. His counterpart David Esser for
Montevallo grabbed four saves and allowed four goals. The Rollins
defense, anchored by senior Scott
Murrell and sophomore Kevin
Boone, held the Falcons to nine shots while the Tars got of
16.
Rollins will return to the pitch on Sunday, September 7 at 2:30
p.m. against Alabama-Huntsville. Fans can catch all the action live
