Winter Park, Fla. (September 7, 2008) - The
Tars were able to capture their first shutout of the season on
Sunday afternoon against the Chargers from Alabama-Huntsville
winning 3-0. The Chargers are still looking for their first goal of
the season and were not able to find it against the brilliant play
of goalkeeper Aaron
Rokeach. The Tars were able to complete this four game home
stand with a record of 3-1 and will face a stiff test from West
Florida coming up next weekend.
The Tars were able to strike first on the scoreboard nine
minutes into the game with Jacob
Deloach sending a free kick to the lower right corner past the
outstretched keeper. Free kicks and corners have been key all
season for the Tars as Deloach is able to put the ball where it
needs to be. The Tars ended the first half with a 1-0 lead on 16
shots. Rokeach faced two shots in the first half and made two
saves. The defense was strong all day long as the Chargers could
not keep possession on the Tars side of the field for very
long.
The second half saw the Tars continuing their strong play on the
offensive and defensive side of the ball. They were able to score
two goals on eight shots. The goals came from J.D.
Gruenewald with an assist from Kevin
Boone in the 50th minute and from Justin
Clark with assists from Leslie
Osei and Aaron
Rokeach in the 63rd minute
Aaron
Rokeach was able to improve his record to 3-1 on the season,
while building confidence for the upcoming SSC schedule. The
defense of the Tars showed it was up to the task today by slowing
down every Chargers attack. With both the offense and defense
playing well the Tars have built momentum that will hopefully carry
them through these tough games.
T
he Tars will take on West Florida on September 12 at 7:30 p.m.
in Pensacola, Florida then travel to Thomasville, Georgia on Sunday
September 14 to face Thomas University.
